Stephen Willeford, who has been credited with shooting and injuring the Texas church gunman, says he's no hero.
Willeford's daughter told him she saw a man clad in black opening fire at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, prompting him to grab his rifle and investigate the shots.
"Every time I heard a shot I knew that that probably represented a life, he told KHBS-TV. I was scared to death. I was scared for me. I was scared for every one of them, and I was scared for my own family that just lived less than a block away.
I'm no hero, Willeford insisted. I think my Lord protected me and gave me the skills to do what needed to be done. And I wish I could've gotten there faster, but I didn't know what was happening.
The former NRA instructor loaded his rifle and rushed out of his home barefoot to the church across the street where he encountered suspect Devin Kelley, 26, before exchanging gunfire.
Willeford told KHSB he shot Kelley several times as the gunman fled the church in his vehicle.
He eventually came across Johnnie Langendorff, who was driving a pickup truck, and told him, That guy just shot up the Baptist church. We need to stop him.
The 27-year-old told The Associated Press he was driving to Sutherland Springs to pick up his girlfriend when a barefooted man who had been exchanging gunfire with the suspected church shooter jumped into his truck.
Gunman kills at least 26 during Texas church services The gentleman with the rifle came to my truck as the shooter took off and he briefed me quickly on what had just happened and said we had to get him, so thats what I did, Langendorff said.
Langendorff and Willeford then chased after Kelley, who authorities say used an assault-type rifle for the church attack that began after 11 a.m., killing at least 26 people, including a dozen children, and wounding more than 20 others.
> He deserves a medal. <
That was my first thought as well. Trump should give both the rifleman and the driver the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The medal can be given “for especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States.”
Those two deserve it much more than the empty suits Obama gave the medal to. Some of Obama’s awardees: Meryl Streep, Robert Redford, Tom Brokaw.
More of a hero than John McCain will ever be.
He is certainly a hero.
Yet the liberals would want to prosecute him as a dangerous bitter clinger with a gun.
I know the killer had an “assault rifle”. Wonder why we aren’t being told what kind of rifle the citizen had? /s
Texas law enforcement reported that the monster had 3 gun shot wounds and the last one (to the head) was self-inflicted. Not to take away anything from the two heroes who shot and chased him (quite possibly preventing a worse killing spree); just reporting what I just heard.
Another interview quoted him as saying he was loading his magazine as fast as he could and couldn’t remember how many rounds he put in it.
It sounds like he had a similar black rifle such as an AR or an AK47 or other sport utility rifle that he used against the murderer.
The murderer called his father during the pursuit and told him he was shot and he didn’t think he would make it.
It appears that he was stopped in his murders by a citizen with what liberals and the MSM call an “assault” rifle.
A good guy with a semiautomatic rifle. Liberals will be apoplectic.
God bless rednecks.
A sheriff spokesman said yesterday the good guy who engaged the shooter had some sort of assault rifle. Could have been another AR 556 or a shotgun made to look scary. I suspect a 556 because the media is not mentioning it.
And had the presence of mind to grab a rifle rather than a handgun. Big difference in outcome. I wonder what kind it was?
There were over 50 unarmed good people in the church. Just the way DemocRats like them.
Thank God for this man and the driver. Real American heros.
He recognized the sounds. Good man. Hats off to him AND the NRA.
When they got the “Run, Hide, Tell” memo, these fellas crumpled it up and filed it in the circular cabinet.
I have no doubt that Willeford caused Kelley to start to bleed out. Kelley probably started to feel weak, knowing he wasn't going to make it and offed himself.
Willeford & Langendorff (sounds like a law firm) deserve high honors, ESPECIALLY WILLEFORD because he critically injured the shooter and STOPPED more innocents from being murdered.
So the guy got him twice and he was on the move. Nice job!!
I’d think the barefoot hero would have kept those locked up.
Every Medal Of Honor recipient I’ve read about said they were scared during their actions.
FB is purging all “good reports” of these guys so I’m gonna post this everywhere.
Look at that Dixie Flag! Libs ain’t gonna like that.
