Florida State University has indefinitely suspended all Greek activities on campus following the death of a fraternity pledge.

FSU President John Thrasher announced the suspension on Monday, according to the university’s Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.

“For this suspension to end, there will need to be a new normal for Greek Life at the university,” he said. “There must be a new culture, and our students must be full participants in creating it.”

I went to UMass. Plenty of jumpers there.

The group punishment is what gets me. Most of the people having to pay for this had nothing to do with whatever it was.

I drank too much at many a fraternity party back in the day. There was strong peer pressure. But it was nobody’s fault but mine. It was a voluntary association I could have walked away from at any time.

Exactly, we've taken self-responsibility out of our mindset.

I suspect that college binge drinking is one result of raising the drinking age to 21. Suddenly being in an environment where alcohol is readily available and with no experience on how to drink in moderation is a bad combination for many college students.

Prohibiting all alcohol at “recognized student events” where the students could be monitored just means more off campus drinking and higher risks taken.

The only reason the school charters the Greek organizations is that these
Grads give more dollars back later. IMHO schools have no business chartering or sanctioning these student party clubs.

Schools don’t really charter fraternities. They just decide whether they can be recognized which usually affects the chartering.

What schools do is deny the groups the right to associate with each other. The school can make it illegal for group members to be together.

...these student party clubs.

There is a lot more to this life than parties.

What fraternity dumped a whole truckload of fizzies into the school swim meet? What fraternity delivered the medical school cadavers to the alumni dinner? Every Halloween the trees are hung with underwear. Every Spring the toilets explode..

It is not the fraternity or sorority. It’s the use of the blackball to eliminate a candidate (pledge) who hopes to make the grade. Some carry that pain for a lifetime. Impossible to forget.

When I was in college the drinking age was 18 so we drank, ALOT.

Still remember trips to Chicago for cases of Everclear.

No one ever died although some wished they had the next morning.

I really know nothing about the facts surrounding this case but why didn’t FSU suspend football season when Jameis Winston was accused of rape?

I have no idea. I think they should all be banned. I am still sick over the death of Tucker Hicks at Clemson.

I totally agree with you. I went to high school and college when it was still 18. Sure, we may have had our first beer at 16 or 17, but I felt I didn’t have to go to the extremes. I agree that raising that age just makes it more attractive to go against the grain and go hog wild.

St. Football.....you must be kidding. FSU football is Heaven on Earth. I am a 91 grad. Great times and football adds to it, but punishment.....never. Fraternities are being punished mainly due to being mostly caucasian.....true fact.

It is outrageous to punish all sororities and those fraternities that had nothing to do with this tragedy.

Thrasher also banned alcohol at all “Recognized Student Organization” events. According to FSU, a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity was arrested Monday in an unrelated case for the sale and trafficking of cocaine.

I don't see the problem there. It wasn't like the frat boy had any alcohol. The problem seems to be inconsistent messaging by the administration. They need to make up their mind about what problem they want to address.
