(CNN)The White House has struck back at both Bush presidents Saturday after the two made stinging comments about President Donald Trump in a new book about the father and son.
"If one presidential candidate can disassemble a political party, it speaks volumes about how strong a legacy its past two presidents really had," a White House official told CNN. "And that begins with the Iraq war, one of the greatest foreign policy mistakes in American history."
"President Trump remains focused on keeping his promises to the American people by bringing back jobs, promoting an 'America First' foreign policy and standing up for the forgotten men and women of our great county," the official said.
Former President George H.W. Bush delivered a blunt assessment of Trump in historian Mark Updegrove's new book, titled "The Last Republicans," saying, "He's a blowhard." And former President George W. Bush also had harsh words for his Republican successor: "This guy doesn't know what it means to be president."

George Bush used the office of President to start a war all over a “so called plot” by Iraqi Intel types to kill his father in Kuwait when the old man had taken his victory lap there. I watched us go into Iraq and it was a damn joke. Our infantry types had no damn clue how to call in TAC air, much less did they keep the enemy from using buses and driving straight down the road behind them. Then Bush appointed that idiot retired Gen. who refused to pay 250-500K Iraqi troops a lousy $50 each that they were owed in back pay. They joined the enemy overnight. His daddy got him in the Air National Guard with a record that stunk to high heaven. How he got into flight school with his record is a mystery like his time in Alabama. Ronald and Nancy Reagan couldn’t stand the Bushes, never invited them to the White House for dinner. The President had to be nudged to endorse GHW in 1988 and refused to be photographed with him in 1992 during the latter’s disastrous reelection campaign. In return, Bush staffers called Reagan senile and demented (GHW is a prime example of that). The opinions of President and Mrs. Reagan on the Bush family, the perverted GHW and his drunken, indolent son GW are good enough for me, then and now.
