With gun violence garnering unflattering national attention for Chicago, carjackings have quietly gone off the charts as well. While shootings and homicides are largely concentrated in impoverished pockets of the South and West sides, carjackings are occurring throughout the city, including the downtown area, Chicago police statistics show.
Last year Chicago recorded 663 carjackings, nearly double the 339 in 2015 and the most since 2009, according to the department. And the numbers have shot up even further so far this year. Through Oct. 18, the latest date available, carjackings have totaled 661, nearly equal to all of 2016 and a 44 percent spike from the same period a year ago.

Criminals ‘shop’ the good stuff, so if they have nice cars/shoes/jewelry/homes when thugs don’t they have to expect to be relieved of them by the underprivileged and accept it as part of multiculturalism./sarc. Particularly in Chicago. Charles Yerkes basically built the initial modern transit system in Chicago (and London).
He was frequently the target of Chicago opinion writers for both the lack of safety - design/maintenance - on his elevated trains, as well as the amount of crime.
Though, I'm guessing it was a somewhat different demographic among the thug population than the current crop of perpetrators, whether muggers or carjackers.
