Veterans group claims motto symbolizes the agencys resistance to gender equity
The VA is defending its motto this week against charges that it symbolizes the agencys resistance to gender equity.
A portion of Abraham Lincolns second inaugural address in 1865 has been deemed sexist as a VA motto by the nonprofit organization Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. The group wrote a letter to VA Secretary David Shulkin this week demanding a change, which it says would better support women.
The motto in question, in place since 1959, reads: To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan.

To care for ze who shall have borne the battle and for zis partner, and zis orphan.
What is the matter with these people?
To answer my own question, first of all they’re leftist political nuts - but more than anything else, they’re products of an educational system that is totally ignorant of history.
I understand the anger at the PC censors, but I wouldn’t mind too much if it were changed to To care for those who shall have borne the battle and for their widows, and orphans.
It’s really only a modest translation, not a full-bodied re-write.
Good question and an excellent answer, these nuts can’t see the forest for the trees.
Bet the LibTurd/LibTard was also Diversity Dem Fem as well
But “widows” is gender specific. Spouse? Significant other? Partner? And I’m not sure about “orphans.” That has to be insensitive to somebody. Maybe “parentless children”?
2017 Version:
“To care for those who self-identify and their life-partners and children who escaped abortion...”
Not One.
“borne the battle”
Why change “burden” to battle?
“borne the burden” is a trope Lincoln got from the Bible.
And when Lincoln made the statement, no women were in battle, so to change it would be inaccurate and gutless.
But totally pointless and uncalled for, considering that even in today’s heavily gender-integrated military the number of women killed and wounded is totally miniscule compared to the number of men. No matter what the left pretends war is still very much the domain of men.
No. You don’t get to go back and condemn someone who is dead for something said at a time when words meant something different from what your distorted feminist mind says they mean.
Lets git er done, folks!
Lol!
I wouldnt mind too much if it were changed to To care for those who shall have borne the battle and for their widows, and orphans.
Its really only a modest translation, not a full-bodied re-write.
But that is simply *not* what Lincoln said.
You follow that path, you better rewrite Neil Armstrong’s words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
...and Shakespeare, “Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your ears”.
These are the same People who think the United States Constitution is a “Living Document”.
Try that “Living Document” stuff the next time you are forced to “revise” your side of a Legal Contract.
They are NOT ignorant of history!
They just don’t like it, so they have to change it.................
Ever play the game "telephone"?
They really do think that the day is fast approaching when combat will be something conducted solely from a cockpit or behind a console.
