By 11 oclock in the morning, as smoke billowed down a nearby hillside, Tesorito began to wonder if he ought to be in the vineyards. It was Monday, October 9, and he was harvesting wine grapes near the town of Sonoma.
My rents due soon and I dont have it, Tesorito told me. The 37-year-old is short and stocky, with broad shoulders and callused hands. Lalo is 58, though he looks at least 10 years younger. Collectively, the friends have spent more than two decades in Californias famed Wine Country, part of an immigrant workforce that props up the states $57 billion a year industry.
Both men are undocumented Mexican immigrants, but tell me that until recently their status hasnt been much of a concern. (I dont cause problems, and I do good work, said Lalo.) The fires changed that. Neither man is eligible for the various forms of federal disaster aid, which ranges from unemployment benefits to housing assistance. This was their fourth meeting in eight days of searching for anyone who might be able to help.
After sitting through the 90-minute forum, the men approached a table staffed by a representative of a local Legal Aid office and explained their predicament, but while the woman listened politely, she had no advice for them. Everywhere we go, people have told us, If you dont have papers, we cant help you, Tesorito said as he walked out. There is nothing for us.

Mexico just got a big shipment of aid and hope! They should go check it out.
They might not have personally set the fires but people similar to them did.
If the Von Trapp Family Singers burned down Mexico City, I would wager that blondes probably wouldn’t be too popular in the area for very long.
Plenty of hope in Mexico
What happened to the H2-A Visa Agricultural Work Permit Program?
Do the CA Wineries have some sort of a Don’t Ask / Don’t Tell Employment Policy?
it ought to leave them searching for the border.

Give them a ham sandwich and a bus ticket to Mexico City.
“Tesorito said as he walked out. There is nothing for us.”
“But Tesorito, that’s the way it’s been since you stole your way into our country.”
BTW, night before last, was the first time our security cameras caught a “Hispanic Transient” attempting to sleep at our office building in Napa. It took about ten minutes for the NPD to arrive (with a second Spanish-speaking officer arriving to converse with the guy) and send him on his way. Under newly-minted CA law, an initial trespass is no longer a misdemeanor, it’s an “infraction,” so the cops just tell them to leave with an admonition that if they are found on our property again, it is a crime involving arrest. I suspect Mexicans will replace the white trash as our primary problem now.
In Napa, the wineries and county build housing for the workers.
Yes, just go home.
and plenty of sun and fertile soil
They should take a bag of premium grape roots and head back to mehico....
start a wine industry there.
I read somewhere that some major vineyards around the world were started with just a handful of wine grape cuttings.
Piss on them! They and their employers are anti-American criminals!
This has no relevance. The author must be gay.
Simple solution. Make a run for the border. Adios. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Let's get the message out!! LOL
They don’t need no stinkin’ permits.
Another example of ICE failing to do it’s job. These people aren’t hiding in the shadows. They’re in your face flaunting their illegal status. ICE can’t find an illegal in a Mexican protest parade.
Geee....that’s a shame
