Yuli Gurriel, one of the key hitters for the Houston Astros, was suspended for five games without pay at the start of the 2018 season after television cameras caught him making a gesture and mouthing a word with racial overtones during Fridays game.
Commissioner Rob Manfred announced the suspension at 1:05 p.m. PDT during a news conference in Houston after he met with Gurriel on Saturday before the Astros were to play the Dodgers in Game 4 of the World Series.
Gurriel also will have to undergo sensitivity training.

I have no opinion on whether a baseball player should be punished for that conduct, I have an opinion.
A lesson in sportsmanship and courtesy in the form of a 98 mph fastball up against his rib cage in his next at bat would do him wonders.
So spake Politeness Man.

How about he offers an on-field apology during the next game. Sorta the opposite of the NHL where they work it out prior to the game and then get suspended for the game.

He is saying “chino” in Spanish which means Chinese. Maeda is Japanese but, I don’t see an offense.

Ty Cobb’s alleged racism was fabricated by his crook biographer and others.
I agree with the comment that this is about sportsmanship not political correctness.
As for punishment, I am a believer in the adage that a mistake is a mistake if you make it twice. Give the guy a reprimand with fair warning that next time he will be suspended for a month.

A 5 game suspension next year that will probably be slid into the pre-season is basically a reprimand.

The names and gestures Babe Ruth had to endure while he played would give modern ball players nervous breakdowns

Seems strange for an incident that occurred in the World Series, with a possible 4 games remaining in 2017 why wait?
The delayed suspensions, according to the Commissioner, is a move to keep from punishing the team. The team members fought long and hard for this honor, and have not shaven since their climb began.
A reasonable provision.

No wonder PC has gained the power it has when pearl-clutchers on the right get worked up over something as stupid as this.

Good ruling. He deserves suspension for the offensive nonsense,
Were you offended? Just asking.
If not. What's it to you? If so. How?
Either way, WTF cares?
You people actually wring your hands and clutch your pearls over this kind of $hit?

Sorry, I know it's way off topic, but how funny is this.
America's pastime. A Cuban player slits his eyes (anyone who lived in the 60s, 60s or likely later ever done that) at a Japanese player, and uses a Cuban term for Asian which might or might not be offensive.
The Japanese player says no one is perfect, and we should learn from this.
This, being the American pastime, proceeds with disciplinary action. Next year, when it doesn't matter.
Sad.

Were you offended? Just asking.
Since I'm not Japanese, no. But I can see why he would be, and why other East Asians would be.
If not. What's it to you? If so. How?
I believe that needlessly insulting entire groups of people who have done you no harm is the act of fools.
You people actually wring your hands and clutch your pearls over this kind of $hit?
I didn't wring my hands over it, and I don't have any pearls to clutch. I take it you do, so I'll leave you to clutch them over whatever offends you - obviously open racism doesn't. Meanwhile, I'll say again that a professional athlete who goes out of his way to insult large groups of people on TV is a moron who deserves suspension. Goes of Colin Kaepernick and the other NFL kneelers, goes for this idiot as well.
