Yuli Gurriel, one of the key hitters for the Houston Astros, was suspended for five games without pay at the start of the 2018 season after television cameras caught him making a gesture and mouthing a word with racial overtones during Fridays game.
Commissioner Rob Manfred announced the suspension at 1:05 p.m. PDT during a news conference in Houston after he met with Gurriel on Saturday before the Astros were to play the Dodgers in Game 4 of the World Series.
Gurriel also will have to undergo sensitivity training.

The way I understand it the 5 game suspension starts at the beginning of the 2018 season? Seems strange for an incident that occurred in the World Series, with a possible 4 games remaining in 2017 why wait?

A yes MLB playoff punishment, “you’re suspended... later”. One of the reasons I’ll always prefer the NHL.

I guess we can say actions have consequences “eventually”.

Good ruling. He deserves suspension for the offensive nonsense, but they didn't disrupt the World Series or give the Dodgers a competitive advantage by doing it doing it now. I wish the NBA had shown as much common sense with Draymond Green in the NBA Finals in 2016 instead of suspending him during the Finals.

I actually think this is the appropriate response by MLB (I’m a Yankee fan BTW). The guy screwed up and is paying the price. FWIW, latinos do refer to asians as “chinitos” and it’s not a racist term but the gesture sure was.

1. Suspending a player during the World Series for something that doesn't involve violence on the field or criminal behavior off the field is probably considered an unduly harsh penalty against the player's team.
2. Players earn their salaries during the regular season, not the playoffs. Suspending this guy for five regular season games will cost him a lot of money, while suspending him in the World Series will not.

If you want to consider a 2% of the season suspension consequences. Last time somebody got suspended during the playoffs for later they “commuted” the sentence to pre-season games so it was even more pointless.
