Yuli Gurriel, one of the key hitters for the Houston Astros, was suspended for five games without pay at the start of the 2018 season after television cameras caught him making a gesture and mouthing a word with racial overtones during Fridays game.
Commissioner Rob Manfred announced the suspension at 1:05 p.m. PDT during a news conference in Houston after he met with Gurriel on Saturday before the Astros were to play the Dodgers in Game 4 of the World Series.
Gurriel also will have to undergo sensitivity training.

At the very least it’s unsportsman like conduct which will get you busted in any sport.
To quote someone quite close to me...
The Cuban community is not burdened with white guilt...
IMO, the punishment is too harsh. One game suspension is enough.
If he’d been playing for the 49ers and done it on the 50 yard line, no one would have said a word. Guess that’s the difference between the MLB and the Felon League.
Hard to believe that’s making fun of the way somebody else looks.
The City Houston will announce an Asian-American Sensitivity Week...
Just a chump-change fine for that one.
I don’t know who Yuli is, but this baseball commissioner will do this for gestures... they pick and choose what is punishable. We have a bunch of weak and feminized men who think this is how to run a team.. or a business...
To clarify... the reason he was cited was for a gesture and lip reading.... who set the standards.. and when.. is it just the current popular thing to do.. to tear down statues of past historic figures because they reportedly “owned slaves”... How far back do they go and for how long must we pay for the “sins” of 100 - 200 years ago.. how about dragging robert byrd in for a hearing... he’s guilty... but he’s a democrat... can’t do that.
Ive worked with Philippinos who have made that gesture about each other, saying that another person also from the Philippines had (their word) chinky eyes. I had never heard that term before. It is from Asians that I learned the term Driving While Asian, a self deprecating term said with laughter.
I have no opinion on whether a baseball player should be punished for that conduct, which may well be justified. I think it is smart to penalize him away from affecting the World Series. Ill agree with that.
Actually the pitcher is Japanese, although the guy called him a “chinito” which means “little Chinaman” in Spanish.
He’s got nothin’ on Ty Cobb.
Agree.
A friend was asked the following riddle by a Korean businessman. (Pronounce each word phonetically:)
Q: "How do you brind [blind] a Asian woo-man?"
A: "Poot a wind-shee-ud in funt of huh!"
(Uproarious laughter.)
Certain segments of Mexicans refer to all Asian people as "chinos" even other Mexicans that have slanty eyes. Yes, chino literally means China, but it's a catch-all phrase for our little oriental brothers and sisters to the Mexicans.
This includes Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hmong, Viet Cong, Cambodian, Laotian, and any other chino-like race you can think of. I'm only assuming that Cubans are the same. I've only met a handful of them.
Storytime. One of the funniest things I ever heard was watching these Mexican gang bangers bustin' on this Hmong gang banger and calling him "Chopsticks."
Dodgers need to bean the bastard in tonight’s game...that way he can start his suspension while it means something
Sit him now
Cuban guy makes bad gesture. Japanese guy is classy about it. Media wants another Ferguson.
That's the way these things used to be settled.
NFL players kneeling during the National Anthem is offensive. Why are they not suspended?
This makes no Sense, How in the hell can a White Hispanic be accused of anything other than murdering a boy that could have been Obama's son :)
I would not bet on that, the Chinks in Houston do not like the Vietcong, and no-one likes the Koreans. They may be as bad ad the Gypsies :)
