Bernstein: Indicted Trump officials could face 50 years

Carl Bernstein said yesterday on CNN that Special Counsel Robert Mueller may be wanting "to send a signal to other prospective defendants," by filing his first charges yesterday in the Russia investigation.

"If this person who has been indicted, or persons, are facing 20 to 40 to 50 years for whatever these crimes are - related to collusion or not - there may be others who are subject to similar charges who have further knowledge about dealings with Russia...There are a lot of intentions that the special council is trying to convey here, I suspect."

Why it matters: The charges filed by Mueller yesterday could result in anyone charged being taken into custody by Monday.

Bernstein probably knows no more than anyone else about who will be indicted and on what charges, but by speculating that the person might get 40 or 50 years in prison he gets a lot of attention.

Sessions: Mr. Chairman, it was a highly contentious campaign. I, like a lot of people, made comments about the issues in that campaign. With regard to Secretary Clinton and some of the comments I made, I do believe that that could place my objectivity in question. I've given that thought. I believe the proper thing for me to do, would be to recuse myself from any questions involving those kind of investigations that involve Secretary Clinton and that were raised during the campaign or to be otherwise connected to it.
