Washington (CNN) A federal grand jury in Washington, DC, on Friday approved the first charges in the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to sources briefed on the matter. The charges are still sealed under orders from a federal judge.
Plans were prepared Friday for anyone charged to be taken into custody as soon as Monday, the sources said.
It is unclear what the charges are. A spokesman for the special counsel's office declined to comment.
Mueller was appointed in May to lead the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Under the regulations governing special counsel investigations, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has oversight over the Russia investigation, would have been made aware of any charges before they were taken before the grand jury for approval, according to people familiar with the matter.
On Friday, top lawyers who are helping to lead the Mueller probe, including veteran prosecutor Andrew Weissmann, were seen entering the court room at the DC federal court where the grand jury meets to hear testimony in the Russia investigation.
Reporters present saw a flurry of activity at the grand jury room, but officials made no announcements.

Mueller is authorized to investigate "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation," according to Rosenstein's order.
The special counsel's investigation has focused on potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, as well as obstruction of justice by the President, who might have tried to impede the investigation.
CNN reported that investigators are scrutinizing Trump and his associates' financial ties to Russia. Mueller's team has also examined foreign lobbying conducted by former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, and others. His team has issued subpoenas for documents and testimony to a handful of figures...

Fwiw..seeing on twitter he was in Scif when rosenstein decided to appoint mueller
I wonder about this. Say he decides to indict Kushner or Donald Junior, knowing that Trump would be enraged and fire him (which he deserves) and tries to portray this as a “Saturday Night Massacre” just like Nixon did to Elliot Richardson.
The press would CERTAINLY agree and crow about it 24/7!
NOTHING else would be heard, especially the truth.
He is gonna charge someone close to Trump so he can’t be removed. Jr. or Kushner.
Mr. Roberts for Jay Walking
it is entirely possible that J edgar hoover and LBJ conspired to take out JFK, and could it be that the FBI thinks they can repeat their legacy of being judge jury and executioner of presidents they disagree with
Prolly perjury about the horse races.
Right away people on CNN are saying Trump needs to stop saying the investigation is costly, etc. This is all to change the news and justify Mueller. They ran into court to get indictments now. This was done by Mueller’s much criticized aggressive deputy.
Pardon my stupid (I have not kept track of all this) I am wondering what, in your opinion, Manafort did?
Might have been something Sarah said this afternoon about it,
Comey?
Interesting
That story gives credence to theory that boente resignation triggered indictments
I agree. I read Mueller went 14 years into Manafort’s past[?], which we know has nothing to do with Trump. His case is likely weak at best to convict Manafort as many have alluded to or pointed out here.
Rice
Comey's figure has obviously been photoshopped into that pic. The day this photo was taken, he made sure he wore a white suit so he could blend in with the column behind Mueller.
This was plainly timed to deal with the calls for Mueller to resign. Now they justified their existence, they think.
I knew as soon as the GOP started talking about Mueller’s budget it would start a nuclear war. LOL.
When do we take back Washington by force?
Going to indict the secretary, and give Hillary, Eric Holder, Lynch, Comey, Brennan, Valerie Jarret, Rosenstein, Obama, and a few dozen others immunity to testify against her.
