President Donald Trump is scheduled to present the Medal of Honor on Monday to a former Green Beret who saved the lives of his fellow soldiers during a Vietnam War mission that the U.S. military at one time never acknowledged.
Gary M. Rose, 69, of Huntsville, Alabama, will be recognized for risking his life while serving as a medic during a firefight in Laos in September 1970.
Because Laos was a neutral country at the time, the mission in which Rose was involved was never officially on the books.
This medal and the presidential citation, it honors what the (Vietnam-era veteran) had done, Rose told reporters on Friday. They were asked to do a very difficult thing and they did it. They fought hard and, unfortunately, many didnt make it back. This honors them. We stand up for them and are a focal point in that honor.
Rose said he and his comrades knew at the time this was something different.
