George H.W. Bush apologized to actress Heather Lind after she claimed in a since-deleted Instagram post that he sexually assaulted her at an event in 2014.
Presidential First Children Through the Years “President Bush would never — under any circumstance — intentionally cause anyone distress, and he most sincerely apologizes if his attempt at humor offended Ms. Lind,” the former president’s spokesman Jim McGrath said in a statement to Us Weekly on Wednesday, October 25.
Lind, 34, alleged on Instagram on Tuesday, October 24, that Bush, 93, “sexually assaulted” her during a photo op at a private screening of her AMC series Turn: Washington’s Spies in Houston in 2014. “He didn’t shake my hand. He touched me from behind from his wheelchair with his wife Barbara Bush by his side,” she claimed in the caption of her post. “He told me a dirty joke. And then, all the while being photographed, touched me again. Barbara rolled her eyes as if to say ‘not again.’ His security guard told me that I shouldn’t have stood next to him for the photo.”

It seems to me a President’s power is in his or her capacity to enact positive change, actually help people, and serve as a symbol of our democracy. I can actually help people. I can be a symbol of my democracy. I can refuse to call him President, and call out other abuses of power when I see them. Lind concluded her post by explaining that she turned to her costars and producers for support after the alleged encounter, adding, “I do not respect [Bush].”
The accusation came after a number of women, including A-listers Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow, came forward with sexual harassment and assault claims against Harvey Weinstein. The 65-year-old producer’s spokesperson previously told Us that he denies “any allegations of non-consensual sex.”

The fact that she alleges he did it once, then told her a dirty joke, then did it again tells me that dementia is likely not a factor.
All I can think of, is that if one is in a wheelchair and someone is next to you getting the picture taken, touching could happen that was inadvertently done.
Just saying that, no one has brought that up, especially if it is with a frail old man. The off-color joke though, leaves some smoke in the situation.

Alzheimer’s patients have no filter. So when they see a pretty girl (or guy for the women) they might well make a comment THEY NEVER WOULD HAVE MADE in the rest of their life. My poor mom will try to hug the pool man three times in a 2 minute conversation. They need to be kept away from people sometimes. Their sex drive sometimes is still there but like a severely mentally challenged adult, they need to be controlled. My mom doesn’t sexually assault but she tries hugging men every chance she can. Just like an overly friendly adult with severe mental challenges. They are now in that category of “not fit to stand trial” and they ont remember any of it 3 minutes later anyway, so they are unable to witness even for themselves.
They are truly no longer responsible for their actions and the “assault” is the fault of the caregiver.
What is a crime? Patting a woman on the bottom when it’s next to his face? I’m trying to figure out what exactly she is saying was sexual assault. Feminists say whistling or catcalling towards a woman is sexual assault. This actress needs to elaborate.
But really. He is a very elderly man. She is an idiot. I wonder if that is verbal assault.

I really think the Bush seniors should hang their public appearances up; one on oxygen the other in a wheel chair with a stroke induced paralysis induced grin....privacy is what the Senior Bushes need...IMHO.

How? What evidence would exist of him briefly touching her bottom, even if it did occur? And what evidence would exist that it was an intentional grope? And in light of the many witnesses around and the highly public setting, what jury would convict him based on her allegations?
The case would need to be proven “beyond a reasonable doubt”. Just how would you do that?
If the Bushes were decent men, they wouldn’t hang out with Bill Clinton. But the idea of a guy in his 90s “sexually assaulting” a woman in a public setting, from a wheelchair, surrounded by witnesses...just how ridiculous does an accusation need to be?
What next...accuse him of flying in an SR71 to Paris to make a deal?

It’s up to the police and a prosecutor to make such a case.
The evidence that exists so far is her allegation of the incident. Further evidence would be his response to it to her and then to police.
Why did he apologize?

You can, if evidence places him in the area at the time of the robbery, and if he admits to it.

How is it that people are on this page arguing this didn’t happen and attacking this woman for making this allegation when they do not even know what sexual assault actually is?
I am not a public figure but I have been doing what you described above for most of my life. I saw too many bat-sh!t crazy girls and women throughout my life and decided that if I had to have any more interaction with women at first than an introduction I would shake their hand and always stay more than three feet away from them.
You're being absurd in trying to defend your original position. The women on this thread are not defending the attention seeker. There's a reason for that. 41 is harmless at this age and there have never been any allegations of him being improper with women in his entire career. He's not "used to" anything, he's just old.
