House Republicans shy away from action on ‘bump stocks,’ hoping the ATF deals with it(Ryan punts)

House Speaker Paul D. Ryan backed away Wednesday from legislative action to ban “bump stocks,” the device a mass shooter used in Las Vegas earlier this month to create machine-gun-like rapid fire from his legal semiautomatic rifle, killing 58.

Instead, Ryan and many of his fellow House Republicans hope the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) will act administratively to outlaw the devices, which the agency ruled legal in 2010. ...

“We think the regulatory fix is the smartest, quickest fix, and then, frankly, we’d like to know how it happened in the first place,” Ryan (Wis.) told reporters Wednesday. He did not discuss pursuing legislation to address the issue. ...

bill, sponsored by Reps. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.) and Seth Moulton (D-Mass.), would make it illegal to manufacture, own or transfer any device that “is designed and functions to increase the rate of fire of a semiautomatic rifle but does not convert the semiautomatic rifle into a machinegun.”

Just saying, you can do short bursts, not a whole mag dump if you don’t want to.

Last night on OAN’s “Daily Ledger” they showed a video clip of a guy with a semi-auto rifle “auto-firing” two 10-round mags as quickly as he could change them, simply by holding the butt loosely against his shoulder.

No “bump-stock” or any modification needed.

An idiot killed 59 and wounded 500. Other idiots want to ban it. OK. Ban it. The idiots won’t even slow down, the next time one gets a notion to kill a bunch of people. But ban it, just to vindicate that fact, and the other idiots will still be frothing at the mouth to ban something then.

So interesting that it has competition from Franklin Armory: Binary Firing System

Speaker Ryan is a follower, not a leader. And he follows the RINO/USCC/Elites.

Another idiot killed 86 and wounded 458 in Nice, France, on July 14, 2016 using just a truck.

Where were all the calls for banning assault lorries?

Don’t even need that. A few lines of code will make a $5 Arduino fire a solenoid as often as you wish. Simple trigger linkage, done.

I never said to ban it - you can't fix stupid and evil except for to wipe them out. Both will be with us no matter what we do.

I agree that they shouldn't be banned because it would just open another avenue for those who want to ban everything.

Still stand by only idiots would want a device that allows one to use up a lot of ammo - for every 1 killer out there, there a far too many "hold muh beer and watch this" types out there. It is their right to throw ammo a way as a 'party trick" but I can't fathom why there would be enough of a market to keep them viable as a product.

But that would be ILLEGAL!

A little cowardice in Ryan is a good thing.

I listened to Wayne LaPierre last Sunday. I agree that it was important for someone to get out ahead of all the “regulate” calls after Las Vegas, even if you believe there are no restrictions on the second amendment. If it turns out that Steve Paddock was just a mental case and not a jihadi, then the gun community should take a reasonable and responsible approach to addressing this, if for no other reason than showing we are the reasonable party in the debate.

Fact is, today, constitutional or not, auto fire weapons are regulated. Waynes explanation that bumpfire devices blur the line between semi-auto and auto, putting all semi-auto guns at risk, makes sense in the short term. I don't want my rights to guns I legally own today to be jeopardized. Like just about everything else in life, avoid courts and judges on this, as things never work out better for anyone except the lawyers. I also agree that the longer any action can be delayed, the better, as the knee jerk responses will die down.

Yes, lets increase the power of yet another bureaucracy instead of Congress doing their jobs.

It's better to handle it with ATF than allow the Democrats an opportunity to field an anti-gun bill that fulfills their wildest dreams and sets the stage for even more tyranny. No legislation is superior to a steaming pile of legislation.

= = =

That would include a hand and finger strengthening device.

Better to have it regulated under existing law than to allow some new law to pass and possibly abridge more rights - or worse, we get another last-minute Hughes Amendment to it that screws everyone (just like with FOPA86.)

Those suckers are pricey. Half the cost of my AR, no thanks.

Can’t get one anyway, I live behind Enemy Lines in Commiefornia.

Can’t own that Trigger or even a Magazine that holds more than ten rounds, but a guy who purposely infects someone with the AIDS Virus gets charged with a Misdemeanor and the guy who uses the wrong Pronoun when addressing a Tranny can be thrown in Jail.

To think they want “Common Sense” Gun Control. LOL

There’s no violence, because many laws have been passed for decades to “stop” violence.

Anyone who wants a bump stock can make one. It’s not all that hard. A ban might be used as a pretext for a Ruby Ridge-type ATF raid, such as was done on the Weavers, on suspicion of sawing off a shotgun.

Things that can be done by a gun-smith hobbyist shouldn’t be banned. But sometimes you have to give a mugger your wallet. I don’t care enough about bump stocks to fight for them. Just for the sake of shutting them up, I’d throw bump stocks to the wolves.
