Grassley not planning to change 'blue slip' procedure for judicial nominees

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley doesn't intend to make changes to Senate procedures that could make it easier for President Donald Trump's judicial nominees to be confirmed more quickly, despite calls from powerful voices inside and outside the Capitol to do so.

The veteran Iowa Republican is under pressure to ditch the chamber's "blue slip" tradition that permits members of the minority party to have significant input into which judicial nominees are confirmed.

"The Chairman of the Judiciary Committee will determine how to apply the blue slip courtesy for federal judicial nominees, as has always been the practice," said Taylor Foy, a spokesman for Grassley who confirmed the Iowa Republican doesn't intend to make changes. "Over the years, chairmen have applied the courtesy differently, but the spirit of consultation has always remained."

Is there a reason for this courtesy, or is it just the typical Swamp betrayal of real Americans?

Yesterday, a candidate for the US Senate criticized Bannon for campaigning to change GOP Senators. “We don’t need ‘new’ GOP Senators, we need ‘more’ GOP Senators”, he said.

NO! BANNON’S RIGHT! WE NEED NEW GOP SENATORS ASAP!

IMO the Senate rule is not constitutional. It was adopted by the Senate years ago for reasons of which I have no idea, but of which I feel sure no longer exist. Get rid of it Grassley!!

Apparently McTurtle doesn’t take seriously Brannon’s pledge to primary RINOs who block Trump’s agenda. He may not be up for re-election in 18 or 20, but many RINO senators are and he is endangering them with his stall tactics. Hopefully the RINOs will stand up to him.

Simple. Only appoint judges from RED states with TWO Republican Senators.

see color coded map on right.

The blue rule stinks but there is a way around it. The following states have ONLY Republican senators:

Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona*, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.

So, only appoint judges from these states.

*Flake and McCain are Arizona’s Senators, so President Trump might want to skip this state...

Ha! Great minds think alike. I used the same map, but enumerated them alphabetically, a slower process!

For much of the time Grassley has been in the senate, the rule allowed Republicans some control over the leftist majority.

That’s just silly. You argue for the status quo forever. Hogwash. California and Minnesota need real judges just as much as Texas and Kansas do

Blue slips have been used by Republicans with Obama. Grassley, even as a minority party member in the Judiciary Committee, used several tactics (apart from blue slips) to block noxious Obama nominees.

Grassley can talk softly and carry a big stick, the opposite of most of his Senate GOP colleagues. Don’t be fooled. Grassley is not a fan of McConnell.
