Raging Wine Country Wildfires Burn Homes; Force Evacuations
CBS SF Bay Area News ^ | 10/08/2017 | CBS Staff

NAPA (CBS SF) — Wind-whipped wildfires roared to life Sunday night and early Monday across Wine Country, burning building, forcing evacuations and injuring several people.

The Atlas Peak fire was the largest of several wildfires, quickly growing to more than 200 acres near Napa. Meanwhile, the fire near Calistoga had burned several building and sent several people to the hospital to be treated for burns.

Cal Fire said firefighters were battling several blazes in Sonoma County. The largest was in the area of Porter Creek Road and Petrified Forest Road near Calistoga where mandatory evacuations were ordered for residents along Porter Creek, Petrified Forest, Franz Valley and Mountain Home Ranch Rd.

Early Monday morning, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department said fires had erupted at Mark West Springs and Riebli roads in Santa Rosa, at Shiloh and Conde roads in Windsor and at Highway 116 and Fredericks Road in Sebastopol.

The fires had stretched Sonoma and Napa counties firefighting resources to the breaking point. A call for mutual aid was issued to other Bay Area fire departments.

Thanks for this link...I plan to buy farmette in a few years, and this is something I have wondered about.

When I was driving up in UP Michigan, I saw a house completely engulfed in flames...So sad...There were water trucks bringing water from everywhere nearby—putting water into a makeshift water tank/pool in the middle of the road...remote areas where fire trucks cannot get to easily do present a problem.

I visited the Hess vineyard in 97. Are there fires near there?

Ran into Johnny Miller there...

Anyone know?

I haven’t been there, but went to website and it looked like a very scenic setting.

My niece and her family live in Santa Rosa also. She posted on FaceBook that they were evacuated. I pray for all those involved.

I highly doubt that the power lines banged together. Are you stating delivery voltage, or transmission voltage? Poles or towers?

He is certain he lost his home and everything in it. He also has a business in town (curios and hippy art etc.) which he is hoping to save.

Sad for him. I have a sister in Santa Rosa and another sister in Sonoma. Sister says waiting to hear if they have to evacuate. Sister's husband in Sonoma has a great deal of antiques in their home, no way to transport much of it if called to evacuate - some of the stuff is from 1700s. But lives are more important. By the way, they are staunch conservatives!

I bought a full-size fire truck to protect my property.

Wow...No one can say you are not prepared. Can you use it for other purposes? Assuming you are fortunate and don’t need it for fires?

We have species of plants that can’t even propagate without fire.

Interesting...I did not know that...Are you near that area of fires?

Most folks are sleeping at 3:30 am - how will they even know their neighborhood is on fire?

Good question which I asked my relative in Sonoma. She said that the wind was keeping her wide awake anyway but that her and the husband's phones kept blaring alerts. BTW, so far they and their home are OK. Many others said that police and firefighters came door to door urging folks to leave immediately.

There are high heavily forested north-south ridges that separate the valleys in wine country. I believe most of the fires are in the hills below the ridges and on the ridges themselves. The fires generate strong uplift winds that carry the fire to the top. I don’t know how much danger the vineyards are in. The area covered by vineyards is immense!

Napa Valley AVA. 225,300 acres of land. Encompasses almost the entire county of Napa and is home to 400 wineries. Within that area, there are 45,000 acres of vineyards

The appellation of Sonoma County totals more than one million acres of land of which 60,000 acres area planted to winegrapes. The county includes 13 distinct AVAs as well as being a part of the North Coast AVA. The larger Sonoma Coast AVA has 517,000 acres. Sonoma County is 52 miles wide and 47 miles long and is currently home to 260 wineries.

Mendocino is an approved American Viticultural Area with 275,200 acres. The total area planted to vineyards is 16,700 acres.

The western portion of Lake County comprises the North Coast AVA. It encompasses the Clear Lake AVA, which in itself has 168,900 acres of land, the Red Hills Lake County AVA, and High Valley AVA. Within Lake County, a total of 8,530 acres are planted to winegrapes.

So, vineyard areas:
Napa - 45,000 acres
Sonoma - 60,000 acres
Mendocino - 17,000 acres
Lake - 9,000 acres

Thank you for posting this...I heard on news 8-10 vineyards are affected now...

It is my belief that the fires were caused by the high winds banging poiwer lines together creating sparks that werew carried by the wind, if not out right damaging the lines in some places.

I am here in Fresno working the Big Fresn Fair. My wife got the call to evacuate early this morning. I have been up since then trying to get here accurate information. SHe has no computer, no smart phone, etc...just a land line and sometimes TV>

We are effected by the LaPorteFire/CascadeFire here in Butte County. She did load up everything in our busvan and is waiting to see what shakes out. While re did get a mandatory evac, the winds died down or shifted so that the fire is mostly in Bangor and Rackerby in Butte and Loma Rica and Collins Lake in Yuba.

I think she is watching our neighbor across the street. He has a scanner and said he will give a call if things change. Early this monrning she could see the red skies from the Cherokee Fire as well as the La Porte Fire.

I had to laugh at my honey...I said maybe we should load up the new tent top we got this last fair and damned if she didn’t load it up. That top is worth 700 bucks 20x10 Celina Tent vinyl for those in the know. Our boys are waiting in standby (our two-headed turtle) Their food is loaded up and everything is ready to leave if needed. Just talked to her and even local news isn’t giving info...just concentrating on the Santa Rosa fires. Granted its bad, much like the Oakland fire back in 1990. But a little news from the locals about what we might be facing would be appreciated.

There are numerous reports of downed power lines in various areas. I am hearing them on the scanner here in Butte COunty. So it is very possible that high winds caused downed lines in areas aroudn the North State causing the fire. Makes much more sense than Antifa running around setting fires in various areas of the state...Something I have seen written here.

Yes, there are many staunch conservatives in California...it used to be Reagan Country :( Just like where I grew up in DuPage County, IL

Wow, shame about all the antiques...Hope they are one of the fortunate ones who has a house spared. This is so much like the flooding in the South...just cannot imagine what the people are going through...Both fire and floods are very scary!!!

Downed and causing fire is far more likely than banging together. Sorry if I read your post wrong.

An aside, are they transmission tower lines?

As I have said, I cannot imagine what it would be like to be woken to that...leave immediately with your purse and clothes on back...

Those prepper threads are right...need to have a go bag ready to put in car!!!

No way, not this thread. This is an incredibly beautiful part of CA with many conservative old line families

90% of CA is great, it’s just the big city centers that are weird

If we did controlled burns like we did 30 years ago, there would be fewer wild fires. But I guess controlled burns hurt the environment.

I had the same thought...You did not need to put the sarc tag...a controlled burn would hurt a lot less than losing thousands of acres and having fire retardant dropped—people breathing smoke, etc...
