Las Vegas (CNN) -- He was a nocturnal creature who gambled all night and slept all day.
He took Valium at times for anxiousness, and had the doctor who prescribed it to him on retainer.
He wagered up to a million dollars a night, but wandered around glitzy Las Vegas casinos in sweatpants and flip-flops, and carried his own drink into the high rollers' area because he didn't want to tip the waitresses too much.
This was Stephen Paddock as he saw himself four years before he opened fire on a crowd of concertgoers, killing at least 58 people in the worst mass shooting in modern American history.
The details are contained in a 97-page court deposition obtained exclusively by CNN. Paddock was deposed October 29, 2013 as part of a civil lawsuit against the Cosmopolitan Hotel, where he slipped and fell on a walkway in 2011.
What otherwise would have been a mundane proceeding offers fresh details about Paddock's life and habits -- for the first time -- from the killer's own mouth. The document has been turned over to the FBI, according to sources.
Paddock's testimony offers little insight into what could have prompted last week's attack. He said that he had no mental health issues, no history of addiction and no criminal record.
He said he was prescribed Valium "for anxiousness" by Nevada internist Steven P. Winkler. It was unclear how often he took the drug, but he estimated that he had 10 or 15 pills remaining in a bottle of 60 that were prescribed a year and a half earlier.
Rage, aggressiveness and irritability are among the possible side effects of taking diazepam -- better known as Valium, according to a manufacturer of the drug. It is not known when Paddock last took the drug.

The Valium theory goes out the window if he only took 50 pills in a year and a half.

I’m guessing that he lied like this throughout the entire interview. Although there would be enough witnesses around to check his stories out.
I’m pretty sure he lied about the fall too - it looked pretty staged.
I remember the day after it happened a thread, here or somewhere else, a poster simply asking if we’ll find out shooter was on diazepam.
Most mentally ill people don’t know they are mentally ill.
That is a very low amount of Valium. Not enough to cause him to snap. You are looking at less than 1 pill every 10 days. Not even enough frequency to build up in the system.

Was prescribed Valium for back pain years ago. Didn’t take it long but never saw any side effects, especially like those they are now citing in an attempt to blame the drug (and manufacturer) instead of the person. Could someone be looking for “deep pockets” for a future lawsuit?
Did he sue that hotel (in the article) and win a multi-million dollar judgement? That might explain his wealth.
NEVER MIND. I googled it, and he did not win the lawsuit, and still owed court fees.
Unless you consider when it was that he took them. The first I heard of the prescription, it was this past June. Would your statement be folly if he did not fill the script even a year later?
Have you ever lived with anyone who has taken these in that dose (10mg)? I have and the side effects are spot on. My wife was scripted only two of these to take before a back procedure. She totally lost two days of conversations we had after we returned home. Then she was irritable for no reasons at all which is totally counter to her normal state.
It only stuck with me because it was a fast moving thread, and that’s all they posted. I don’t know enough about it to be able to make heads or tails. Thanks for sharing.

Number 1 big question: where did he get the money to gamble?

The FBI is busy right now trying to find the Russian hookers who peed on the bedsheets in a Moscow hotel room.
As rich as he was supposed to be, why would he still owe court fees? Unless one of his quirks was being a resentful skinflint, which opening comped bottles and not drinking them might speak to...
He was an amoral shell. Gambling, prostitutes. Waiting to be filled up with homicidal rage.
