President Trump spoke with Mike Huckabee, the father of his press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, in an interview that aired Saturday night. He discussed Iran, Puerto Rico and Las Vegas, and returned repeatedly to the claim that "I was handed a mess" and that the media is treating him unfairly despite his successes.
On the Las Vegas gunman: "This was a sick person, but probably smart." He congratulated the police for acting so quickly, and said many of the victims he met "support what I do."
On the hurricane response: "We got very high marks. We got A-pluses." On Puerto Rico's problems before the storm: Trump said the electric grid was a disaster. "They've got a lot of problems, and on top of that they get hit by two hurricanes."
On San Juan's mayor: "We have a mayor of San Juan Puerto Rico who didn't attend meetings, who didn't work with FEMA, who really did not do a very good job, in fact did a very poor job, and she was the lone voice that we saw and of course that's the only voice the media wanted to talk to... she's not a capable person."
On criticism of him tossing paper towels into a crowd of victims: "They had these beautiful, soft towels. Very good towels.... I was having fun, they were having fun. They said, 'throw 'em to me! Throw 'em to me Mr. President!" On responding to tragedies: "In one sense you hate to see it, but in another sense you feel like you can do a good job, you're helping people, so you feel good."
On Israel and Palestine: "We're gonna work [toward a peace deal]... I want to give that a shot before I even think about moving the embassy to Jerusalem." On the Middle East: "The Middle East when I took over was a mess, and it's much less of a mess now but we have problems."
On the Iran deal: "I can tell you I'm very unhappy with the deal.... They're literally causing trouble, predominantly in the Middle East. I believe they're funding North Korea.... that doesn't pertain to the deal but in my opinion it does because it's called the spirit of a deal.... You will see what I will be doing but Iran is a bad player and they will be dealt with as a bad player."
On the filibuster rule: "They have to get rid of it... It's a death sentence. I told Mitch McConnell that the other day, and frankly" he's not there yet. On his tax plan: "I'm really focused on the middle class, and I'm really focused on companies because companies create jobs.... We're going to have the biggest tax cut in history.
She will go a very long way.
“Sarah Huckabee Sanders is a first-rate professional.”
I couldn’t agree more.
I think Sarah is the best. Love how she handles those press morons.
She smacks down the misbehaving children in the press room every time.
Trump has gotten some unfair criticism for the "turnover" in his Administration but this is how it works in corporate America. It sometimes takes a few hires to get the right person for a particular job. A smart CEO is not afraid to make changes and admit that his initial hire was a mistake. It's all about finding the best people for the job and you don't really know it's the right person until they are given the position (such as putting Rex Tillerson in as SoS).
I remember when Mike Huckabee was Dead To Everyone. His weight, then his weight loss, then his weight ... his evangelical religion ... he was “soft on crime” ... he was “open borders” ... he was a “Huckster” because of his recurring candidacies ...
I remember further back, when he was considered to be doing pretty well as Governor of Arkansas, and he was also praised as a band leader.
One just can’t keep up.
Tell us all Tax-chick why you list all these inconsequential things which only the far left ever cared about instead of stealing furniture from the governor's mansion and having great concern over Josh Duggar but no concern anyone could measure regarding the little girls he kept on groping? Those were the things that bother me, and they are non-negotiable.
There is a massive disconnect between your position yesterday regarding Hugh Hefner and the people who support him vis-a-vis the support of this opportunistic snake oil salesman.
Sarah is doing a great job. I have also been surprised how well her father has defended President Trump on TV.
I’m simply pointing out things I remember. I have not followed Huckabee’s career that closely, so I was not aware of the additional things you’ve brought up, including Huckabee’s view of the Josh Duggar situation.
Are you saying that only the “far left” cared about Huckabee’s positions on crime and immigration? Or something else?
Only they and his immediate primary contenders ever considered those things important beyond any ongoing elections.
The things I mentioned have caused normal people to be through with Hucklebee and the things he does for the foreseeable future. They are of lasting importance.
That girl’s got spirit, a quick wit and, when needed, a sharp tongue. She won’t back down
A strong female with intelligence. A refreshing treat to see this in DC
I agree. However, this article seems to be about his positive relationship with Donald Trump.
Thanks!
I remember it well. I was a Huckabee supporter here back in 2008 and endlessly bashed for supporting him over the less conservative Romney, McCain, and Giuliani.
Huckabee was endlessly called Elmer Gantry, Huckafraud, Huckster, Nanny-Stater, Bill Clinton with an 'R' next to his name, etc., etc., and a photo op of his family was endlessly ridiculed with how fat and stupid they all are, including his daughter Sarah. All that from a guy who called "the FReeper Governor" while he was in office and headlined two George W. Bush inauguration with nothing but praise from this board.
Now, of course, we're back to square one where Huckabee is once again a respected "conservative statemen" since his daughter is Trump's White House Press Secretary, and we're told that "only liberals" would say anything nasty about the Huckabee family.
The Schizophrenic nature of this board is very odd at times. I wonder if all the anti-Huckabee commentators from 2008 would have the balls to tell Sarah Huckabee what they REALLY said about her dad when he was running for President.
What a snarky headline.
Exactly. It’s just a weird phenomenon. Public figures are gushed over one day, non-persons the next day, and then back on the pedestal by Tuesday. Don’t dare miss a memo!
