On Israel and Palestine: "We're gonna work [toward a peace deal]... I want to give that a shot before I even think about moving the embassy to Jerusalem."

Correct me if I'm wrong but the embassy has already been moved to Jerusalem hasn't it?

Never mind. Should have looked at the date closer.

>> Exactly. It’s just a weird phenomenon. Public figures are gushed over one day, non-persons the next day, and then back on the pedestal by Tuesday. Don’t dare miss a memo! <<

Yeah, I have trouble keeping track of it anymore. Are we all supposed to love or despise Ann Coulter and Mark Levin these days?

Lindsey Graham is an even more extreme example: he was absolutely loved on this board during the Clinton impeachment era 20 years ago (YIKES! has it been that long?), absolutely loathed during most his Senate career-- to the point where numerous FReepers screamed the top of their lungs that he was the "worst RINO" in the Senate and pretended like "Linda Grahamnesty" was to the left of Olympia Snowe, and now, finally, he's now a conservative hero again.

Gives me a headache thinking about it.

Good example. I’m astounded, myself, by the turnaround on Graham.

Yeah, you’re right.

I prefer accurate and through assessments to love/hate based on what the person has done in the last 5 minutes, though “what have you done for me lately” is very important in politics.

I will say about Huck though that he used to hawk a fake diabetes “reversal” supplement that’s main ingredient was CINNAMON, a sign of bottom basement lack of character (or complete idiocy if he actually believed in what he was hawking), I’m not big on “character” but I find it appalling he would do that. He also sold out to his name to other people hawking garbage including something about the bible having a secret cancer cure or something.I also hear he’s a huge jerk.

The 2008 field was atrocious, I give everyone a pass. I picked Romney over McPain, Huck had no chance in IL so I didn’t consider him.

Just because the daughter is doing well doesn’t change my opinion of Huckster. He WAS an awful Governor who all but destroyed the AR GOP. If you’ll remember, when he left office in 2006, all the party had to show for was a declining minority in the legislature, not a single GOP-held statewide office and only the sole GOP Congressman, John Boozman, in the district that had been held since 1966 (indeed, in 1966, there were 3 Republicans in high office, Hammerschmidt in the House, Winthrop Rockefeller as Governor and Footsie Britt as Lt Governor), and 40 years later, just Boozman.

His Democrat successor did more to vault the GOP in AR to majority status by accident than Huckster did on purpose.

I’ll never forget, too, his berating Christians — in church, no less — that they were wrong (if not evil) for opposing his flooding Arkansas with illegals to work as de facto slave labor in the Tyson food plants. That’s only one of many things.

Again, his daughter might have her head on straight, but Huckster himself will always be a phony who has his head straight up his ass.

It turns out this phenomenon has a name.

“Splitting is the failure in a person’s thinking to bring together the dichotomy of both positive and negative qualities of the self and others into a cohesive, realistic whole. “

The biggest example of cognitive dissonance I saw was when numerous FReepers were trashing Rick Santorum for endorsing Mitt Romney over Giuliani, McCain, and Huckabee during the 2012 primaries (this was after Fred Thompson had ALREADY dropped out). They acted like Santorum's endorsement of Romney was taramount to treason to the conservative base, even though about 80% of FReepers ALSO Romney during that primary.

The gist of the argument was basically: How DARE Santorum do what the vast majority of FReepers did!!!!

As I noted, I was in the tiny minority of FReepers at the time, I endorsed Huckabee instead. And as Impy noted, looking back on it, there really WEREN'T any good options in '08.

Oops, I mean Santorum endorsed Romney in the 2008 primaries.

And then got viciously attacked for it during the 2012 primaries.

I guess we were supposed to see that as "bad" by getting collective amnesia about the fact that MOST of this forum endorsed Romney in '08 as well.

Yes, it’s common for it to be mandatory to cheer a candidate during the campaign and then to act like one always thought he was a rotter a few years later.

I don’t thing there’s anything strange about supporting someone when he’s the only option you’ve got. It doesn’t mean you think everything about him is wonderful.
