Have Tattoos? Well … Study Says: Lower Your Professional Expectations
Heartland Institute ^ | 10/8/17 | Clifford F. Thies

Have a tattoo? If the answer is “yes,” it’s more likely you’re unemployed or completely out of the labor force. On average, your income is lower. You’re more probably a smoker, use illegal drugs, engage in risky sexual behavior, have been a victim of crime, and have been incarcerated for committing crime yourself.

I dunno.

It depends what kind of office you work in.

In some places, a visible tattoo on a woman would drastically increase the chance that she would not be hired. An employer might also restrict her contact with clients.

Same goes with ear piercings for men, even if the earring is removed.

“I think it’s hilarious when the old curmudgeons around here get all judgmental..”

Yeah. It’s like people see something that looks stupid, and actually voice that. What the hell is up with that?

I’ve gotten way, way more picky about establishments with tatted types in dining facilities.

I love mine. WAY up on the arm, not even short sleeve shirt shows it.

Flowing Roses with the leaves showing my father’s name an two of my uncles’ names

All vets and all great men. I could make it longer to add another name but no one else has ever made close to the impression these 2 WWII men and 1 Korea man did.

Couldn’t picture uncle Ralph in Korea. He was a small guy and the most opposite thing from a fighter i saw.

Until he got lung cancer and fought it more bravely than anything i’ve ever seen.

God Bless All Three.

i will never get another tattoo. That was or special people and it’s done.

Same here. In my entire life I have never seen anyone who looked better with a tattoo than without.

I think it’s hilarious when the old curmudgeons around here get all judgmental..

No kidding! Whoa! I didn't think such a level of outright willful ignorance existed here. That is quite the shame.

For the record, I'm an employed white collar professional college graduate who makes decent money, doesn't smoke, been married over 11 years, takes the necessary precautions to protect myself and my family from crime, and I've never been incarcerated. Oh, and I have 11 tats.

The BS stereotypes make some of these judgemental aholes look really stupid.

Small, discrete and personal.

Loser definitely. Self mutilation is an outward sign of a serious mental defect.

Ask them why they got a tattoo and get a glimpse of the defect.

Being a loser.

The tattoos are for being cool and no longer a loser.

Delusional loserism is contagious

I have several and none of the above examples apply to me at all. Learn your job, bust your butt and tattoos or not you will make a decent living. ONE exception, neck or face tattoos.

It's not a stupid article. It should be a word of warning for those young people who for whatever reason are contemplating getting tattoos. For like it or not, people are judged by them and not in a positive way. People with visible tattoos are generally assumed to be from a lower socioeconomic background and also less educated. Chances are, a major corporation will not be looking to promote you to any position of higher visibility or responsibility as you will not fit to their corporate image of an executive or professional person.

Also, any tattoos that will always be visible, such as on your face, your neck, or your hands, those are considered "jail-house" tattoos and it will be assumed that you have done stretches in prison. Yes, those tattoos will make you "bad ass." It's likely nobody will mess with you in a bar. On the other hand, it's also likely that no major company will ever hire you for a client-facing or management position.

Now if you are looking to be self-employed all your life or want to live as a rebel such as with a motorcycle gang or in a rock band, then I say go for it, if it is your inclination to stamp your body in ink and you have no designs on a corporate or "straight" type of life.

I know people don't like to hear that and wish for a world where nobody will be judged negatively for their tattoos. But reality is, you will be judged and visible tattoos that cannot be covered up by clothing will absolutely limit your professional prospects, as the article points out.

Isn’t it a requirement to have a lot of tattoos to play in the NBA?

On TV I’ve seen women in evening gowns, some strapless with tattoos down their arms. Gross.

Master Chef TV show has a chef judge, some Latin judge. He has these nasty tattoos down his forearms to the wrists.
Looks dirty. Wouldn’t want to have him handling my food.

Does that crap study include

Must have missed the 9th, 10, and 11th word...

it’s more likely

This is a generalization, not a specific.

People in society are a generalization.

You and the few people you mentioned are specifics.

Self mutilation is an outward sign of a serious mental defect.

It used to be a more reliable sign. But since tattooing has entered the popular culture it's hard to tell. Perfectly normal people following the trend have made it impossible to perceive it as such.

I still think it's a hideous thing to mark one's body in that way.
