Sources: Vegas killer paid cash for property and privacy

Mesquite, Nevada (CNN)He seemed so ordinary, just another house-hunting retiree, when he strolled with his girlfriend into the sales office of the Sun City development in late 2014. The agents had just what Stephen Craig Paddock was looking for -- a 2,000-square-foot, two-bedroom stucco rambler on a cul-de-sac.

Other houses might offer bigger floor plans, but the one on Babbling Brook Court had two big selling points: a commanding hilltop view and, perhaps most importantly, privacy. Neighbors lived to the left and right, but none behind the home. Paddock quickly said he'd take it.

He stood about 6-foot-4 but came across as "low key and relaxed, a good guy," one of the real estate agents recalled, speaking on condition of anonymity. Balding and paunchy, Paddock was the opposite of flashy. On his application, he said his income came from "gambling." He said he gambled about $1 million a year.

And he paid cash for the house, the agents said -- $369,022.

His income hasn’t been explained. He spent huge sums of money yet I’ve yet to read where he got the money.

I’m Vegas guy. Nobody makes money as a professional gambler, unless ou are doing poker. It doesn’t sound like he played poker.

Money laundering is quite possible.

He played video poker - which is a money losing proposition.

So where did he get his money?

Money laundering is quite possible.

That's what I think.

He played video poker. Depending on the game the payout ratio is anywhere from 93% to 100%.

Even 7% is cheap to make dirty money clean.

TigerClaws,

I know that you are following this pretty well. Have you heard anything about hotel surveillance videos? Certainly there has to be a number of videos showing this guy.

Makes you wonder if any of those weapons had serial numbers on the Fast and Furious list.

Your link is to online games. Casino machines in Vegas run from 97% to 99.8%.

Soon, Paddock set about making alterations to his pumpkin-colored ranch. And his deep desire for privacy had the opposite effect: It drew the attention of neighbors.

Paddock erected a solid mesh privacy screen that blocked his neighbors' view of his home.

And some people believe this is the guy marching in a pink pussy hat at an anti-Trump rally.

I don't think so.

Another neighbor said Paddock told her, "I don't want to be looking at people, and I don't want people looking at me."

See above.

As much as I want some other explanation (something that could be prevented in the future), I think this guy was just an evil nutcase.

What’s been said is that in the years he lived in Florida...he was an accountant. At some point (probably 1990s), it appears...he got into property purchases and land speculation. He owned two aircraft for a fair amount of time as well.

We may find later that he was laundering money for people and simply taking a cut. He’s into algorithm-type gambling...meaning he was fairly clever and capable.

The thing I find most interesting about this guy is after several days we know hardly anything about him. Think that one through with all the internet sleuths out there.

That is a huge red flag. This guy is dirty or a fed. I am leaning toward the later because of the only employment we know he had in the past and that position took clearance(how that happened with his father is beyond me).

Yep. And then replaced it with plywood.

When you don't post anything on the internet, there's nothing for the internet sleuths to find.

You can bet investigators are doing a thorough forensic analysis of any computers, tablets, smartphones, etc. he had. That's going to take time and even then, there might not be much there.

We're so used having a long trail of activity to quickly build a narrative whenever these types of crimes are committed. Not this time. There just isn't much to go on, not yet anyways. Unfortunately, this leads to conspiracy theories and accusations of coverups.
