The spectacular blizzard of confetti that fluttered down during "(I Wanna) Rock and Roll All Nite" had barely settled Saturday (Sept. 30) at the Gretna Heritage Festival when the Kiss concert took an unexpected turn toward the patriotic.
"It's always cool to love your country," frontman Paul Stanley told the mostly appreciative audience. Joined by Gretna politicians, the singer-guitarist congratulated Army Major Steve Roberts for his 30-plus years of military service.
"Some people believe that freedom is free," he said. But Kiss, Stanley said, appreciates military sacrifice.
In an odd visual juxtaposition of symbols, Stanley, dressed in a glittering black, midriff-exposing costume that evokes rock 'n' roll abandon, led the crowd in a respectful recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

"KISS made everyone do the pledge of allegiance before they would do an encore," Bantam Foxes wrote. "That was the least rock and roll thing I've ever seen."
Stanley lets them have it! Worth watching.
“We stand up and put our hands over our heart!”
They also donated $150,000 to a veterans group.
Rock n Roll has always been about Rebellion, and today, Conservatism is rebellion.
That's what Mike Cernovich says!
You don’t have to be a straight-arrow dressed in a Brooks Brothers’ three piece suit to love your country and honor its more meaningful rituals.
Tell that to Ted Nugent -- a man who knows a thing or two about rock and roll.
And patriotism ...
We are the counter-culture.
“love your country”
I did prior to January 22, 1973.
Being conservative means being a rebel.
I've said this previously but it's worth repeating. Trump and patriotism are the new punk.
Of course some punks are diehard leftists. But even The Dead Kennedys were anti-fascist and Biafra is anti-Antifa (even if he is wrong On other levels):
Im not down with confronting [the extreme rights] provocations of violence with actual violence. I mean, self-defence is one thing, but going to a Trumpist rally with the express purpose of beating up fascists what does that accomplish? Whos the fascist now? It plays right into their hands, he says.
More than ever, we have to keep our heads right now. And I am all about freedom of speech, but I think protesting these people non-violently is the way to go, because it lets the targets of the fascist speakers know theyre not alone and lets the fascists who show up know that theres an awful lot of people who are not down with them, and a chorus of raised middle fingers is better than showing up with some kind of a weapon. Escalating the violence is not the way to go.
A search on FR for "conservativepunk" show about a dozen articles covering that movement. Indeed, Andrew Wilkow was a big force in that movement.
Former Misfit and current Undead leader Bobby Steele put it best:
Bobby cleared up the most popular misconception about conservative punks, "That we're Nazis National Socialists. It's impossible for someone on the right to follow the teachings of socialism, which is a left wing belief. There's also a misconception that we're blindly following President Bush. We're not. If you were to read the opinions expressed at Conservativepunk.com, you'd see there are a lot of criticisms of the way things are being done right now. I'd say the thing that really brings us all together isn't so much that we're conservative as it is that we're sick and tired of being dictated to on how we must think to be punks. The left has consistently shown itself as the 'Thought Police.' We believe in the constitution, human rights, free speech and freedom of the press."
Right after the election, there was a well-written article on this topic called Is Trumpism the new punk rock?. In short, yes.
Trump may get lost in the details, but he gets the big things attitudinally right. Put another way: He may know only three chords, but Wattenberg says his followers hear the "right three chords."
I am not a Kiss fan at all, but I'd rather have a coffee with your average punk or Kiss fan than your average Springsteen fan.
Ted Nugent has been doing it forever and a day.
Never leave the stage, KISS!
One of the few living links to a saner time.
One thing ya gotta say....biker types and heavy metal guys tend to be straight-up American.
I never liked Kiss’ music, but I hate Springsteen; the man is an abject fool and ingrate. He really can’t sing and his music is jarringly repetitive. I agree with you.
“Conservatism is rebellion.”
Ida never thunkit. Guess I’m a rebel. OK with that.
+1. Correct!
his music is great...if you wanna hang yourself....what a miserable sob..
That would make a great T shirt.
