Google is conducting a broad internal investigation to determine whether Russian-linked entities used its ads or services to try to manipulate voters ahead of the U.S. election, according to a person familiar with the matter, a move that comes after Facebook and Twitter said Russian actors used their sites.
Google, part of Alphabet, is also talking with congressional officials who are investigating Russian efforts to influence the election, and plans to share its findings with them once completed, this person said.
Congressional leaders have scrutinized Facebook and Twitter this month for Russian activity on their sites—and criticized the tech companies for their lack of disclosure of such information.
Google, pending a potential meeting with lawmakers, has said little. The company earlier this month said that it found no evidence that it sold election-related ads to Russian actors. But it didn’t say how deeply it was investigating the issue, or whether there was other types of Russian interference on its platform.
It also hasn’t said whether it will accept an invitation this week from the Senate Intelligence Committee to testify publicly on Nov. 1 about Russian interference on their platforms. The committee also invited Facebook and Twitter to that hearing. Facebook and Twitter haven’t said if they have accepted the invitation.
It is unclear what sort of activity, if any, happened on Google’s sites. But Google runs the world’s largest advertising business and largest online-video site, YouTube, making it an obvious place for investigators to look.
Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, which is investigating Russian influence on the election, said that lawmakers want to speak to Google “given their dominant force online that has an advertising component.”

Fact that Ruth Porat, Google’s British born CFO and her husband Anthony Paduano hosted Hillary campaign events at their house and were important figures involved in Hillary’s campaign is supposed to have nothing to do with this according to Democrats.
I am sure Chelsea knows of Russian interference that kept her mother from winning and so she must also testify to Congress.
What a joke they are here and they expect this to be treated seriously.
It should be an investigation of all foreign political advertising, to put things in context.
People are conflating “Russians communicated views during the election” with “Russians stole the election”, hoping that if they demonstrate the former, people will believe the latter.
I agree. We’re not stupid. We’re just talked to like we’re stupid. WE don’t have short attention spans - the MEDIA has the short attention span. And then blame us.

And the way they did was diabolical, secretly injecting Hillary with alcohol at Ground Zero on 9/11 just so she would fall down in front of cameras; mysteriously killing people close to her for decades, just so people would blame her. How could the Russians have wanted Trump to win so far in advance!
Russia HAS attempted to influence elections in Europe. So far as the pipelines is concerned, all the biggies including Russia, Saudi Arabia, and the big oil companies were upset at the low price of oil being influenced by the big influx of Dakota and other fracked oil. Stopping the Canadian pipeline would help keep the price of oil higher. How many large oil companies were involved in the Dakotas or was this a case of the small oil producers getting a break for once? Now that they can no longer produce, I’m sure the biggies are snapping them up asap. A lot of the little guys have had to shut down because with the low price of oil, they can no longer afford to produce.
Apparently the whole election was determined by Russian tweets. All 1800 of them. /s
What about a more complicated explanation?
Several different groups may have tried to influence the election. Some might have been within the Russian government and some might have been independent hackers working from home (around the world).
Their results may have been largely negligible. And they might not all have been in one direction.
Part of the motivation might have been just to kill time or see if you could do something or not.
In the grand scheme of things, it might not have been very significant. But the Democrats found out some details and are pushing the line as hard as they can because it could sound incriminating until people get a better sense of the real world scale of this activity.
I doubt that even a thousand people changed their vote because of anything they read from a Russian source, or failed to read because of interference. The issues were clear cut and there was no shortage of information readily available to help any voter figure out which of four main choices to support.
The Democrats are sore losers. They can’t believe they lost to a rank outsider with such obvious negatives. Perhaps the real hack was from the globalists who replaced an actual candidate (Bernie Sanders) with Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton could probably lose a presidential election to almost anyone given the existence of the electoral college, and her failure to find out about its existence in 2016.
