That was a question included in FAQ section of Playboy magazine’s website about a decade ago. Their answer: “Probably not. We'll never know.”
Never came sooner than expected. In 2016 the print edition of Playboy tried an experiment: the magazine would still feature women in provocative poses, but they would no longer be fully nude. This year Playboy returned to publishing nudity. It turns out nobody was reading it just for the articles.
While the experiment was short-lived, it still came as a shock. If you were to travel back in time to mid-1970s—when Playboy reached its pinnacle of circulation at 5.6 million—and told people the magazine was forgoing nudity, the assumption would be that that the anti-pornography faction must have finally won. But just the opposite happened. As Scott Flanders, the company’s chief executive, said at the time, “You’re now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free. And so it’s just passé at this juncture.”

I subscribed to Playboy for many years.
Playboy is like Rush. Many insist it is bad but don’t actually read or listen.
Funny thing..... I had a stack of say 10 or 12 playboys under the guest room bed. Termites came up through the subfloor and hardwood floor into the Playboys and bored all the way through the top. there they ceased and actually left my house.

We’ve always been surrounded by ‘em. Naked women everywhere.
But, you must not challenge the “pornography” meme. Such an act will reap excoriation around these parts.

Of course they left. After they finished reading the articles it was time to go to your neighbor’s house to digest the latest issue of The Economist.
This was a time before the Russians controlled our voting habits.
Heffner’s audience was as much at fault as he was, as Playboy achieved the status of deity in college dorms
Hefner and Satan are probably high-fiving it right now.
Give me a brake! Hefner was the first to acknowledged and tastefully feature the natural beauty of womanhood.
That Hefner tricked men into putting that magazine in a brown paper bag and bringing it home...Or hijacked, yeah, that's it, makes it sound more violent.
In my days, we drew naked women art on caves, I tell ya!
He could NOT have done it without willing women.

Ehen I was a teenager in the mid 70s, we already saw Playboy as lame.
I thought it was a million years of evolution.
Best day for dumpster diving (when we were 12) was the day the college let out for summer—all kinds of good stuff—yes, including Playboys! Little bit of everything!
IMO, Hefner is on THE one 2Oth century person most responsible for moral decline in this country.
