Elementary school librarian rejects books given by Melania Trump

By Max Greenwood - 09/28/17 01:42 PM EDT

A Cambridge, Mass., elementary school librarian said in a blog post this her school will not be keeping a collection of books from Melania Trump, though the school later denied her rejection of the gift.

Earlier this month, the first lady sent out collections of 10 Dr. Seuss books to one school in each state to mark National Read a Book Day.

In a letter published on the Horn Book's Family Reading blog, Cambridgeport Elementary School librarian Liz Phipps Soeiro said that her school wasn't in need of the books, which included famous titles such as "The Cat in the Hat."

"I work in a district that has plenty of resources, which contributes directly to 'excellence,'" she wrote. "My students have access to a school library with over nine thousand volumes and a librarian with a graduate degree in library science."

Instead, she wrote, the White House should worry more about providing support to schools that are underfunded and subject to government neglect.

"Why not go out of your way to gift books to underfunded and underprivileged communities that continue to be marginalized and maligned by policies put in place by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos?" she wrote.

According to CBS Boston, Cambridge Public Schools said in a statement that Phipps Soeiro "was not authorized to accept or reject donated books on behalf of the school or school district" and counseled her on a policy against using public resources for political purposes.

But Phipps Soeiro said the books were "a bit of a cliche, a tired and worn ambassador for children’s literature."

I’m a school librarian that has enjoyed buying books about conservatives for years. Also took great joy in weeding every Kwanzaa book in the district and also taking a pass on purchasing anything about Hillary or the Obamas. You should have seen the propaganda that my predecessor had stocked the shells with. It was a practical Liberal Land. No more though!

What a bitchy thing to do. I pity the children going to THAT school.

...a bit of a cliche, a tired and worn ambassador of children's literature...Howie Carr did a whole segment on this on Newsmax this afternoon - deliciously, it turns out that in spite of this snotty librarian's opinion about Dr. Seuss, the Obamas - yes, those Obamas - were big fans The First Family reads the "Cat in the Hat".....

This woman needs to be kept away from young children.

Glad you posted this story. I was just going to do so myself, but decided to skip it because the copying/pasting was difficult. The librarian’s actions and note to Melania are simply outrageous. But, it doesn’t surprise me. I served as president of our local Library Board and found that the “professional” librarians were often very liberal and little Marxists who liked to throw their weight around about what the patrons could and could not read. The more radical the better.

I learned how to read by age 4, and had only my parents' college textbooks, a set of World Book Encyclopedias (1959-era), and monthly mailings of "Anaesthesia & Analgesia" magazine to read. My grandparents collection was somewhat more forthcoming, with Kipling and Michener, Ferber and Twain and much more.

I attended grade school believing that there must be some hidden mystery of wisdom which it was mine to divine from the obvious and mundane tasks we were given. When, in the 2nd Grade, I finally realized that they actually were just teaching us to read and write, and that there was no hidden jewel of knowledge, I lost interest in the process.

But I kept reading virtually anything I could get my hands on. And that has made all the difference.

;^)
