Its a $100 million MTA project shrouded in secrecy, with 18 of them for tunnels and bridges. So what are they exactly?
The MTAs man in charge of the bridges and tunnels, Cedrick Fulton, dodged Carlins questions Wednesday.
I said no comment, he said.
Some MTA board members, including New York City Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg, say they know too little about the towers even with half the money already spent and some of the towers already up.
A lot of the board members felt they didnt have all the details they would have wanted, myself included, she said.
...
Its a bit mind-boggling that the MTA is approving $100 million for what appears to us to be big, decorative pylons, says John Kaehny, the leader of the watchdog group Reinvent Albany. What were asking for is transparency from the MTA.
CBS2 demanded answers from MTA Chairman Joe Lhota.
Carlin: Some of your own board members say they dont know the specifics.
Lhota: The base of these new pieces that are going up include whatever fiber optics are necessary for those Homeland Security items.
In other words, anti-terror technology. Could that one day include facial recognition? We dont know and Lhota wont say.
Im not at liberty to discuss that, he told Carlin.
So as more of these expensive towers rise, the mystery is tucked away inside them.

One on each side of the road, they look like those shoplifting alarms in stores. Some kind of sniffer for sure. My guess is radiation.
What the h*** is that?
........ The whole Transit Makeover thing in NYC was a ruse to install some new surveillance tech for security reasons in the system. But you didn’t hear it here ... besides .... it’s looking pretty good right!
Radiation sensors, possibly chem detectors
Whatever they are, they paid way too much for them, and they don’t work very well.
That was what I was thinking...just knock it down one night and see who shows up. If it’s federal folks, then it’s got some hype to it.
I bet that it is explosive detection equipment and maybe even detects biological agents along with nuclear...
PING
Beacons for driverless car systems? Being also paired with surveillance equipment?

Lol... he may ride forever through the streets of Boston!
“My guess is radiation.”
I’m guessing you are correct. Perhaps combined with other sensors. I was doing some work at a nuke testing facility and this guy would come out of the little lab building, get into his little Chevy and drive around a track with several sensors set up - poles on either side of the road.
He would go back into the little building and an hour later repeat the process.
I was finally near him at one point when I asked him what he was doing.
“Oh - I’m just running some tests on the various radiation sensors.” He then continued carrying his paper cup with the material in it and set it carefully in his cup holder (personal car!) Obviously dealing with VERY low levels.
Well then! you probably had “The Ballad of Davy Crockett” as well?
The customs and bp use a radar system to “look” through truck/trailers entering into the US. Both at the borders and at some seaports.
