NEW YORK (AP) Through three weeks, viewership for national telecasts of NFL games is down 11 percent this season compared to 2016, the Nielsen company said on Tuesday.
Nielsen said the games averaged 17.63 million viewers for the first three weeks of last season, and have dipped to 15.77 million this year. The 2017 figures dont include this weeks Monday night game between the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals.

The NFL ratings are in focus because of President Donald Trumps suggestion that viewers are turned off by a protest against police brutality that began with quarterback Colin Kaepernick refusing to stand for the national anthem. The protests spread rapidly this past weekend following the presidents criticism of people involved.
THIS IS COMING OFF A HORRIBLE YEAR FALSELY BLAMED ON THE ELECTION
Next weeks ratings will be even more closely watched, since conservative groups and Fox News Channels Sean Hannity have called for people angered by the protests to boycott this weekends games.
Meanwhile, Round One of the new ideological battle on cable television news went to Hannity, who has moved to a time slot directly competing with MSNBCs Rachel Maddow. Nielsen said Hannity had 3.27 million viewers on Monday, compared to 2.66 million for Maddow. CNN, which showed a special health care debate at the same hour, had 1.45 million viewers.
What do they think it is? Soccer?
Even worse than it appears at first glance because last year's numbers were down from 2015.
Cancelled my cable television yesterday. Saved over $1,200 annually! No more money going to ESPN/NFL Network or any of the other networks that promote/encourage the destruction of this nation.
These football elitist making on average at least $2.8 million are telling us what’s most important? Not interested!!
ABC and NBC are experiencing ADUs, “Audience Deficiency Units” which means they are having to refund some of their sponsors money due to lower TV ratings for games than projected.
The damage has begun.
Anheuser-Busch has sent a statement to the NFL that they aren’t happy with the league’s non-enforcement of proper behavior by the players.
It’s getting good out there, folks.
That’s 11 percent down compared to LAST year, but last year was already down about 10% compared to 2015 ....
so it’s a TOTAL drop over the last 2 years of over 20% .... at this rate, the NFL will be extinct in 10 years .... probably sooner, when you figure all the expensive concussion lawsuit payouts that will soon be eating up their funds ....
NFL gets most of their revenue from TV, so 20% fewer viewers means about a 20% pay cut ... the lazy sons-of-bitches won’t be liking that
Oh , does that mean Networks will pay a ton less for next season
Good comment. I did not know about Bud’s stance.
Ratings may be off 11% currently, but I suspect that number is going to climb higher. People are really angry about this ungrateful and insulting nonsense.
Watch for the NFL to unleash a PR blitz to try to stave off further defections.
Regarding NASCAR, their ratings began to crater years ago when they stupidly discarded the traditional way they decided championships and replaced it with the entirely contrived chase system. Also, the death of Dale Earnhardt and retirements of Jeff Gordon and Dale Jr. have left the sport without a genuine superstar. As for your other points, you are right...there are many more entertainment alternatives these days than sitting passively in front of a TV watching trite unimaginative trash. However, the NFL seemed immune to ratings declines until last year when taking a knee became a thing.
The NFL (National Felons League) is in trouble now that they allow and promote those who protest. Couldn’t happen to a worse bunch of crybabies.
MORE WINNING!
“Cancelled my cable television yesterday. Saved over $1,200 annually! No more money going to ESPN/NFL Network or any of the other networks that promote/encourage the destruction of this nation.”
We cut our Comcast cable in June, and our savings are similar to yours. That took away a lot of monthly $’s that ESPN/Disney/ABC were getting from our outrageous monthly Comcast bill.
Last week, we cancelled our Sling TV Blue/Orange/ABC and now just use Sling TV Blue. We now save another $25-30+ bucks per month. Sling TV is used for streaming some programs/channels via our internet.
Even better news, Sling TV Blue does not carry ESPN nor Disney/ABC. So, we are not paying, at least $9/month to ESPN just by using Sling Orange.
To me, pro sports have been in a decline for a long time

Excessive commercialization turned me off a long time ago. The “events” are mostly advertisements with a few moments of the game interspersed here and there.
I have much more productive things to do with my time than watch this nonsense, and the insulting whining of hypocritical players, coaches and management.
Not enough! We need much bigger numbers for decline. Burn it down!
