An Alabama school district decided to halt its decades-old practice of reciting the Lords Prayer over a loudspeaker before high school football games after atheists complained but that did little to stop fans from still belting out the biblical invocation.
The fascinating moment, which united players, fans and parents from both teams, came on Friday night when the announcer called for a moment of silence in place of previous student-led prayer at Smiths Station High School games, AL.com reported.
The Lee County School System decided to halt the Lords Prayer tradition after the Freedom From Religion Foundation, an atheist activist group, wrote a letter complaining about it.
Its especially unacceptable for public schools to invite proselytizers to take advantage of an immensely popular school event in order to preach, FFRF co-president Annie Laurie Gaylor said in a statement. Any time we contribute to halting that, we feel vindicated.

Awesome, do whatever it takes to not cave to petty tyrants. I’ll bet no one took a knee for the national anthem either.
That's a violation of their First Amendment rights.
I tweeted to conservatives. Heartwarming.
Just imagine how fast these Fascists would have bought down America’s traditions of freedom with der Hildebeast as President. I say it is time to put these horses in the corral with some chalk talk to the American people.
I love the Lords Prayer. I say it no less than 10x daily.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof
The softball leagues in South Alabama and in the Panhandle pray the Lord’s Prayer at the end of every game. I’m not sure if it is a good thing or a bad thing because the girls just recite it without thinking. It would be more meaningful if the adults in the bleachers would stop packing up and join in.
In context, OF and FROM are opposing prepositions where the latter requires enforcement — totally antithetical to the 1st Amendment.
A football stadium with its own Waffle House!
Tyranny of the assh0le mnority. Crowds should always do what they did. Just do it anyway. Freedom OF religion, not FROM religion.
Our Fatther, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, ...
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, ...
On Earth as it is in HEAVEN.
Give us this day our daily bread.
Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
on earth as it is in heaven
You said it!
“For Thine is the Kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.”
