Roy Moore defeats Luther Strange in Alabama Senate runoff

Alabama voters today pick a Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate, choosing between former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore and Sen. Luther Strange.

Today's winner advances to face Democratic nominee Doug Jones on Dec. 12 to fill the Senate seat Jeff Sessions left to become President Trump's attorney general. Strange has held the seat on an interim basis since accepting the appointment by former Gov. Robert Bentley in February.

“I think Trump’s endorsement of Strange confused people who then just stayed home.”

It could be the greatest reverse psychology trick ever played. Trump might have just been trying to get the Democrats to stay home.

If Democrats had voted in the Republican primary because they know the Republican candidate will win, then they probably would have picked Strange over Moore.

Whether it was intentional or not, Trump’s endorsement of Strange helped Moore, which helped Trump!

Can someone explain why Trump didn’t back Ray Moore, but backed Strange?

And why is this a win that Trump’s candidate lost?

Some have posted that maybe Trump was deliberately supporting the losing candidate so the Dems will stay home because Moore won’t have the Trump endorsement behind him?

I’m not familiar with Alabama politics at the moment.

Yes!

Now, Trump most definitely owes it to Moore to mend bridges and campaign for him EVEN HARDER than he did for that corrupt Strange rino-creep.

‘Never Trumpers don’t know whether to be sad or glad.’

If they did know, they would no longer be never-trumpers.

Roy Moore could become a bridge between Trumpists and rock-ribbed conservatives IF Trump reaches out a hand.

Granted, Trump should bear in mind that Moore is free with the word, ‘sodomy’, regarding homosexuals. It might be necessary for Trump to ‘agree to disagree’ on certain points. [Sadly.]

So this is to hold on to a Republican seat but Moore would be an upgrade, I think.

Does that include all the Democrats who illegally voted for Strange?

I think he endorsed Strange as a gesture to McConnell.

Now that McConnell has proven to be a miserable pathetic loser who cannot get anything done, Trump bears no political consideration of McConnell anymore.

I don't think he endorsed Strange as a gesture to McConnell. He's certainly not going to endorse Jeff Flake, which would thrill McConnell.

I think the analysis over why Pres Trump endorsed Strange is over-thought. I think the reason is simple.

To my knowledge, Strange never cast a vote in opposition to the President, and he never uttered disparaging comments or undermined him.

He got the endorsement because the President is loyal.

Roy Moore REMAINS conservative, even when conservative is no longer cool.

Your analysis may be correct. The downside to this is that the President evidently values personal loyalty over ideology, meaning that Trump would prefer a liberal or "moderate" who is personally loyal to him to a conservative who quarrels with him.

However, I wouldn't discount the possibility of a backroom deal with McConnell and Ryan where they asked Trump to support establishment incumbents in return for playing ball on aspects of Trump's agenda like the border wall.
