"...the latest outcropping of technocratic busybodyism: The scanning of your cars electronic ear tag, its Vehicle Identification Number or VIN."
"Now the guy behind the counter will scan your cars VIN which is tied to the DMV and first find out all kinds of things about you and your car. Then he will tell you which tires youre allowed to buy. Yes, really."

They may even be aware of your ticket rap sheet as well.
They certainly know the cars maintenance history assuming you had work done somewhere that has a computer and that information was entered into the computer. All the better to track and up-sell you.
Eventually inevitably this will morph into something else. You will be required to have a certain service performed because the computer says so. And its not safe to wait.
Wait and see."
Is this a policy in all 50 States?

For God’s Sake Mr Luddite. Go buy some dehydrated beans and hide in a hole in the ground.
This is why i lug in the rims and have the tire monkey load them up with the tires.
Then I go home and install my own damned tire with a torque wrench!
It is a habit I got used to helping my brothers work on cars and stuff on the farm.

The tire shop has no business knowing all of your business.
Thanks for that info. I will place a cardboard card over the VIN number next time I buy tires.
I would really frustrate them, anyway. My neighbor helps me to do most of the work on my vehicles.
I have NEVER had anyone tell me what tires I'm "allowed" to buy.
I'm calling BS on this.
No. Alabama, for example, doesn’t have safety or emissions inspections, ever. Now, you could be cited by an authorized officer of the law for having an unsafe vehicle, but there is no annual inspection.
Does that not require two vehicles?
It’s a public database. They’ve been doing similar stuff for ages, since not all tires fit on all cars. All this does is automate it. And there’s an app for it on iTunes. Welcome to the 21st century.

Grace what “business” of yours do you think they’re going to get from the VIN?
Will they know where you were this morning?
Will they know when you last went to the bathroom?
Will they know who your closest relatives are?
Will they know who you voted for?
Will they know what toothpaste you use?
Will they know what TV shows you watch?
Will they know if you pray and for what you pray for?
Will they know what color your underwear is?
“All of your business”?
Gee, I had no idea the VIN held so much information.
I believe so. AFAIK, it works something like this: The Feds have everyone’s VINs because they are tied into the DMV. By private companies scanning VINs, they have access to much private information about you. The article describes it better than I can.

Or a spare set of rims!
Or a spare car, I always have two vehicles, two used decent vehicles is less expensive than owning ONE “new reliable car”
Plus the insurance on a new car that you owe a loan on is freeking expensive! The car payments and the insurance, vs. saving my damned pennies up and buying a whole used car and knowing about auto maintenance has saved me many tens of thousands of dollars over the years, not bad for a farm gal living in the city.
Been doing the same after buying some $$ BBS wheels and not trusting the monkeys.
At least one place would not sell the tires I wanted unless I gave them a make and model. Said B.S. as I knew what would fit that was a size wider than the book.
Now notice in SoCal all the low riders with undersize tires on rims too wide.
+1...started doing that when they started telling me what tires I could have.
Teapottius tempestous
What a petty trivial concern

About five years ago, I attempted to buy 31” tires at a Costco in Nevada for my Jeep Wrangler which came stock with 30” tires. They would not mount them as they said that according to their computer, only the Jeep Rubicon came with 31” tires. So I bought the tires, loaded them in the back, drove home and had my local guy put them on for me.
