The Steelers will be on the sideline during the national anthem in future games, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and defensive end Cam Heyward said during a news conference Monday.
Roethlisberger, via a statement posted on his website, said he has regrets over the Steelers decision to wait in the tunnel during the national anthem at Sundays game in Chicago, but that the teams intent was not to protest the song, the flag or the military.
Roethlisberger said that he personally believes that protests have no place during the national anthem, but that the idea was to show unity as a team in the wake of president Donald Trump saying NFL teams should fire players who kneel for the anthem.

Just bought my ARMY jersey that not only has the number 82 (his jersey #)but one that also honors the 82nd airborne.
You have parsed his political babble perfectly. Vague is the manner in which the SJW’s speak or write so as not to be held responsible for their actions or what actions their vagaries provoke.
I do have a modest suggestion for all of the Social Justice Warriors, activists, complainers, celebrities and community organizers within and without all of the sports leagues: NFL, NBA, now the MLB (Oakland A’s).
I think each league, sport celebrity, executive, should take on the challenge of the inner cities and begin an “adopt a city block” program WITHOUT TAXPAYER FUNDING. They adopt and purchase an entire block in the heart of the inner cities: LA’s Watts, SF’s Hunters Point, etc., rehab it, rebuild it for the inhabitants. Then screen people who will move in.
Provide a safe school and medical clinic on the block or blocks.
In other words, they believe they are pointing to a problem? Then accept the responsibility of correcting said problem.
Financially they must prove they are all in for their cause du jour, by doing more with their own money and stop begging money from taxpayers to fund their stadiums, their pet projects (The Warriors Curry got Obama to pay for mosquito nets in Africa).
Before they raise one more fist in the air or place another disrespectful knee on the ground, they should ride in patrol cars with police officers who come into contact with the victims of the people they champion. Go into the neighborhoods where crime is high and face what the police face - when and if they come out in one piece, we may listen to what they have to say.
Until then, they have earned the disrespect they have sown.

He is crying phony crocodile tears because spineless Ben realizes his money gravy train is over because he, along with the ENTIRE STEELERS TEAM INCLUDING THE OWNER, MANAGER, COACHES ALONG WITH THE ENTIRE STEELERS STAFF EXCEPT FOR JUST O N E solitary, honorable, patriotic, America loving team member has as they say in the military: PERMANENTLY "Screwed the pooch".
The Steelers fans are never coming back because they love America more than they do an NFL team that has demonstrated once and for all time that the Steelers actually HATE America, our flag, our nation, our values, the military, the police, and they DESPISE THEIR FANS.
STAND FAST; Don't be seduced or deceived by their phony remorse, apologies and pleas for "forgiveness". ALL THEY AND THE NFL CARES ABOUT IS FLEECING YOU OF YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY.
Spineless Ben is crying and losing sleep because he realizes too late that he, along with every one of the Steelers save just ONE MAN just "killed their fan base goose that laid the golden eggs" with their own hands! Now that the goose is permanently dead, Spineless Ben is trying in vain to resurrect it.
Yep - I caught your earlier post AC and you were SPOT ON !!
Good Eye !
Not one of them goes into Chicago and does a thing about the out-of-control violence that is plaguing the city. They just complain and turn a blind eye toward REAL problems.
They are selective in their outrage.
Thank you. That’s a great find.
All “spineless Ben” cares about is the money!
wondering if this is a slow planned pr rollout
If they’ve put Ben out there back-peddling then you can be sure they heard loud and clear from Steeler fans!
The New England Pussyhats
And if they were protesting Trump, they were protesting MY President! If they used the national anthem to protest Trump, they just doubled down on repulsive/.
The New England Turncoats!
When will the Pittsburgh Steelers officially change their team name to PITTSBURG KNEELERS?
That would reflect their true character.
I think the videos posted all over the internet of fans burning their NFL merchandise has stunned a lot of people in the NFL. And almost every one I saw was posted by a Pittsburgh fan. The one from that guy in Texas was epic.
I would love to see an empty stadium at the next Pittsburgh Kneelers game, and a turnout so huge at the next non-football event where Alejandro Villanueva appears that there is no parking for ten blocks.
i sense that the reason for the traditional gesture of putting one’s hand on one’s heart during the anthem and/or saluting the flag is that it is supposed to be an automatic action... such as taking action to protect your family or your country. conversely, to refuse to put one’s hand over one’s heart implies to some extent that that person does not feel an obligation to come to the aid of the USA in time of need (and all that that implies), nor to respect those who did or their sacrifices. (this could imaginably even the starting point for an interesting essay...)
i wonder, did any of these guys that took the knee ever serve in the armed forces?
back to ben, maybe the point he unintentionally is making is that his support for his country is very conditional upon the social situation in which finds himself at any given moment. However, conditional or late support of our country in a time of critical (life or death) need is often equal to no support at all.
It would have been mind blowing had the other guy had someone else on the team beside him or behind him to show some support. If nothing else, this guy’s agent must be crying because of the lost visual PR opportunity...
I’ll be tuning in next Sunday, only for the National Anthem and long enough to listen to the Steeler fans boo.
I agree. I’ll see them singing the Anthem hard the rest of the season. They all hate losing.
