Brain damage was diagnosed in 87 percent of donated brains of 202 football players, including all but one of 111 brains of National Football League athletes.
This new study, published today in the journal JAMA, is the latest linking dangerous head injuries to football, though the authors note that the true risk may be lower than the results suggest.
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, is the term for brain damage that occurs after repeated blunt impact, like head tackles in football. Previous research has shown that CTE is linked to among other things memory loss, depression, and dementia, and in recent years it has become a point of controversy within football.

Allowing them to be unpatriotic and diss the flag is bad for business too, yet the commissioner and owners encourage it.
Yes. People who throw this out as evidence are ignorant imbeciles.
There may be, and is indeed likely a link. If they did the analysis on a thousand NFL players and and a thousand randomly selected physically active men who played a variety of sports and engaged in other physical activities, I will bet there is a higher incidence in NFL players. And in Hockey players. And in Soccer players. And in Baseball Players. And so on.
Gee. Doesn’t raise a flag to some people that, there might be some bias inherent in this when 99% of the brains display CTE? Doesn’t even occur to the dummies that there is a reason they were doing pathology on these brains, that their families or the individual made them available for a specific “reason”?
It is fine to attack them for being unpatriotic and dissing the flag, they deserve it.
Attacking them on the basis of this stupid “study” just shows ignorance.
Is brain injury their excuse for leftist beliefs?
It may be related, it's due to mental illness.
These people who parrot this are the same type of people who would report that 99.9% of the Soviet population participated in the voting process in the USSR and thought that was a positive sign of citizen engagement.
I’ve had two concussions over the years. The second was pretty bad. Danged if I know how anyone could play with one.
I can think of plenty of ways to make the game safer. Weight limits for players, penalties with larger fines, ejections for more personal fouls.
To me the game is about athleticism, teamwork, and strategy, not assault and battery. You can still have those 3 elements while further mitigating the risk of head injury.
Which is why it would be very helpful to be able to read the dang study for ourselves.
Agreed. Good questions to ask:
1.) What was the age of death?
2.) Did the person exhibit any unusual behaviors indicating CTE?
3.) Was the player convinced to donate their brain to research by their family who saw symptoms?
4.) Was the player convinced to donate their brain to research by a lawyer on behalf of the family, who were told the estate might benefit from a lawsuit?
These people make it sound like they were Marty Feldman just taking random jars of brains from football players off of shelves and doing an analysis. At least Igor could claim he simply misread and thought he was taking the brain of Abbey Normal. I doubt these people could make such a claim.
BFD
I’ve run into trees snowboarding, taken hits to the in fights and other sports.
Heck, even got knocked out once.
Pretty sure I have some damage too but, got a pretty face so, it’s all good and the ladies love me...
So that’s their excuse for being a numb nuts .
There’s your sign.....
Also look at medical history before football, family history, substance abuse, PEDs, chemical exposures from practicing/playing on grass and/or turf...
Actually going back to leather helmets and teaching proper tackling techniques will help as well.
As well as imposing a weight limit of 250 pounds.
Bizarre as it sounds, eliminating helmets might reduce concussions dramatically.
It would force players to use proper tackling technique instead of going for the "SportsCenter" hit.
"donated" brains are a very select group...
of course people will donate their dead loved ones brains and they'll do it for specific reasons...the football player acted strange or the family wants money...
similar to what I’ve read about boxing...once they made the gloves more padded, they were heavier, thus causing more damage to the brain, not less...
Well give them back their brains so they can understand that we stand up for the National Anthem...
Boxing gloves protect the wearer, not the opponent, I always thought.
