An Arizona public school district says one of its teachers broke school policy when she reportedly had her class recite an altered version of the Declaration of Independence.
A 4th-grade teacher at Salk Elementary School in Mesa altered a poster of the historical document by crossing out two instances of the word men in the second and third sentences and substituting it with humans, a local ABC affiliate reported. She then had students recite the altered version in class, the station said.

They moved the student, but not the teacher?
Whoever did that should be reprimanded also.

Absolutely.
It doesn’t specifically say but it sounds like the school principal made that decision and district official reversed it.

Most fourth graders are able to understand the concept of using the word “men” to mean, “mankind”, which is to say, humankind. Too bad their idiot teacher couldn’t just explain that, instead of changing a sacred national treasure to reinforce both her ignorance and her sense of social bias.
To: jazusamo
At the risk of riling up FR, I don’t think this is a big deal. What did “men” mean? Did the Declaration only apply to males? The change did not alter the meaning.

I wonder if animals are as stupid as humans? Doubtful...
To: Onelifetogive
I think it’s a big deal because this idiot not only altered one of our sacred documents but then displayed it to 4th grade students teaching them.
How about a teacher that would alter The Constitution or the Bill of Rights and teach students with the altered version?

If citizens cannot exercise their voting power to reasonably resolve such situations, then Congress has failed to guarantee them a republican form of government imo.
"Article I, Section 4: The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government [emphasis added], and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence."
Insights welcome.

What’s this got to do with this thread?
Just curious.

Heck, they’ve been doing this in Catholic and Protestant hymnals for decades. Once upon a time, people knew that “men” or “man” simply referred to a human being in general. But the idiocy of the 60s is not only still with us, but somehow seems to have gotten a hideous second wind now.

Wow. What a far cry from my school days. Back around 1971 or so,we had a substitute teacher named Miss Zambone. She was old as dirt. She was teaching us about Nathan Hale,The Man Without a Country, with tears in her eyes. She also would tear up,and have to pause when talking about the Declaration of Independence.
