Until Turner’s rebellion, Virginia had been moving towards emancipation. (Britain freed all her slaves in 1833). After that, the movement went the other way, for fear of the slaves.
Turner effective smothered the anti-slavery movement in Virginia; had that movement succeeded, a civil war would likely have been avoided (it’s difficult to imagine a Confederacy without Virginia).

Needs a John Brown statue along side it.

Robert Lee and Thomas Jackson played big parts in a violent Virginia uprising of their own.

From what I’ve read, Nat was an idiot. His plan was kill everyone on his plantation, march to the next and kill everyone there—the idea being that there would be no one to raise the alarm. Killing everyone meant killing every white person regardless of age. He was going to lead his army into the Great Dismal Swamp. What they’d do there I (and likely he) have no idea. The mob of slaves was spotted by a man on horseback, the alarm was raised and the slaves were hunted down.
He is featured in the history books because his was the only real slave revolt in US history. (Which doesn’t really look good if you think about it.) It led to a lot more restrictions on slaves’ lives than they had previously had. It convinced whites that strong militias were needed to keep something like this from ever happening again. So yes, by all raise a statue to the “mastermind” of mass murder.

A slave revolt is different to me. If anyone captures and enslaves someone, the slave has a god given right to kill as much of that society as they can achieve.
What was he supposed to do? Wait patiently? Hope someday he would be able to argue his case in court?
If isis captures someone, think that person has a right to kill captors and everyone with them, if they can?
The hell with that. He seems like a heroic character to me.
What else would a slave owner expect, compliance and acceptance?
I don’t like the reasons the blm types want this statue. But i got no heartburn with turner.

Exactly this is pathetic.
To: DesertRhino
Murdering women and children is never OK I don’t care how you try to justify it.
To: Altura Ct.
So you expect Turner to show tender concern for the families of the people who kept him enslaved and worked him like an animal?
If I was captured by ISIS, as I made my way out of Raqqa I would kill as many of them as I could get a tire tool on. And then id burn his house down.
I don’t see how you can expect a slave to respect your family anymore than you respect his.

And of course this is all about actual slaves, these modern morons aren’t fit to shine Nat Turner shoes.
But for actual slaves, i think they have a right to visit tremendous violence in terror captors. Teach em a very bitter lesson they won’t forget i say.

There was also the experience with emancipation in the British Caribbean. There, the newly freed slaves disdained work on the plantation, and work in general. Production collapsed. It was thought the same would happen in the U.S. It was thought it take generations for people who associated work with being a slave to be turned into reliable free laborers.
To: DesertRhino
The US would have been a better place if not one single African slave had ever set foot in the US.
