UPDATE: While Murphy initially said his tuition-free plan would cost as much as $400 million, a Murphy spokesman later clarified that the most it would cost would be $200 million.

TRENTON -- Democratic nominee for governor Phil Murphy on Monday formally announced a plan to offer tuition-free community college to all New Jerseyans.

"We simply do not have the workforce that we need," said Murphy, standing on the sidewalk of the Trenton Junior College & School of Industrial Arts and flanked by U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J. "We can and we must open the doors of opportunity, wide, for all residents."

Four states, including New York, already offer community college free to graduating high school students.

...tuition-free plan would cost as much as $400 million...

That makes no sense whatsoever! But, it never has!

Fine, as long as it only funds tech/trade schools where people can actually learn a marketable trade and become good tax payers.

But they tell young people that learning a trade is for schmucks. Only degrees in soclial justice matter.

This idiot thinks the answer is free sh*t. Those who pay for it all is the shrinking taxpayer base. It's such a gimmick and the joisey sheeple will suck it up right from the trough. The NJEA is peeing themselves with absolute delight.

BTW,take a gander at any community college and easily come to the conclusion that half do not belong there.

2 year trade schools are what the junior colleges put out. Summers off. Not good. Make it non-stop with 1 week between semesters/quarters. Put them to work asap.

Find a place to park the kids that don’t know what they want to do but are too scared to join the military.

We have a free community college program in Missouri called A+, which pays the first two years of college at a community college or trade school. Student must have a 2.5 GPA, 95% attendance over all 4 years of HS, and have completed 40 hours of tutoring. Unfortunately, not too many students take advantage of it. On the plus side, many of the 4 year institutions will give students a $1,500 cut in tuition if they choose their school over going to the community college.

Te way we teach has not evolved much. Technology provides for enormous improvements and new ways to reach kids who are behind as well as to challenge those who are ahead... and literally to offer a lifetime of learning. And yet it’s still “little house on the prairie” as far as the teachers and politicians go.

$15k cut in tuition? I’ll take the free community college + a job. Beats ethnic studies.

This country needs less government indoctrination, not more. Every community college should be sold to the private sector or shut down. Want to go to school at one? Pay the market rate.

One of the biggest tragedies in America is the way our tax dollars are lavished on government-run education, which is nothing more than indoctrination. The government should have nothing to do with education at any level. Parents and churches should be in charge.

A good place to start is in the lower grades. Start teaching the kids how to read and write and some rithmatic too.

It’s amazing the kids I see working that can’t make change.

All residents??? Is this guy crazy? The average IQ in urban areas is 85.

It would be cheaper just to give a college degree to all residents. Pass out those degrees with welfare payments.

Find a place to park the kids that don’t know what they want to do but are too scared to join the military.

Here's my plan:

Build community colleges on or near farms. Students must work the farms 4 hours a day in order to get free college training the remainder of the day. Classes will consist of real-world subject matter, besides how to grow and harvest crops, covering how to budget and grow income, how to maintain living quarters and how to maintain ones' health.

Also teach them that nothing in life is free; if wealth is not created by their own hands it is coming from others' pockets.

Hey knucklehead, (not you Guava)

opportunity also requires ability

otherwise nothing happens because no one knows how to do anything.

We have something similar here in NJ; I guess Phil Murphy wants to diversify it by including crappy students.

NJ has a serious problem with losing young people; billboards advertise out-of-state schools that would cost less for NJ students than their own in-state tuition here in NJ.
