WASHINGTON, D.C. Probing potential cyber tampering and cyber intrusion will now be a standard part of U.S. Navy accident investigation following the Aug. 21 collision of guided missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG-56) with a chemical tanker, Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Bill Moran told Congress last week.
As part of the investigation into McCains collision, a team from the Navys U.S. 10th Fleet cyber arm traveled to Singapore to see if a reported steering failure of the destroyer was a result of cyber tampering, USNI News reported last month.
Vice Adm. Jan Tighe elaborated on the effort during a U.S. Naval Institute and CSIS maritime security dialogue on Thursday.
We will look for a couple of things. One, try to confirm cyber did not have anything to do with the collision and then how do we move forward in making sure these are a normal part of these investigations, she said. It is something that we think about a lot and we have to have both the authorities and the human capital ready to respond.

I don't think the Navy would be checking to see if hacking was the cause if it was impossible for it to be the cause.
Remember STUXNET and the Iranian centrifuges ? No one (a majority of the public)thought that possible until it happened.
Steering failure? Is that going to be the excuse? I guess the sailors on deck never considered the possibility of reversing propeller rotation to slow and, eventually stop, the ship — hopefully before a collision.
Or, since the class of destroyer happens to be twin-screw, maybe stopping one prop while running the other at max revs to turn the ship?
Then again, the Navy has already admitted that both destroyer crews were actually completely unqualified to be running their ships and were lacking even basic navigation certifications.
Translation: They let the diversity members run the ship with no experience or training.
The Chinese or whoever just need to get one traitor to insert a toxic flash drive into certain systems on board a Navy ship. If there are slots for flash drives on some of them.... I really do not know.
This is how we and Israelis inserted stuxnet into computers controlling Iran’s centrifuges.
The first step in fixing this problem would be to rename the ship.
First reputable report I've seen of an actual systems failure WRT the McCain collision.
It was my understanding that the aft steering is simple and robust -- and is what made it possible to bring Fitzgerald into harbor under her own power and control...
Is such failure a common -- or known -- hazard?
The Officer of the Bridge and other watches should have literally seen that massive tanker coming a mile away.
That I cannot answer. I have no idea what the process is. It may be simple and robust, but I don’t know if they have people manning it during a special sea and anchor detail with a lot of ships. We should ask some of our fellow Freepers who may have had experience with that.
I think it is foolish. They said they were going to look into all aspects of it and this is just theater for appearances. It is a red herring smoke screen as far as I am concerned.
I would have a lot more respect for them if they would just stand up and admit it, but that isn’t their style. This is a major embarrassment.
All this does is foster the lathering of people out there who are inclined to see a conspiracy behind it all.
This is all kabuki dance. Does anyone think they haven’t had full access since the mishap to all logs, software and hardware configurations in those systems? It is just stupid, but hey, they are going to go for every hand of soil they can get.

Steering loss at the Helm isn't an uncommon event. I'm not sure about smaller ships but at sea on carriers there is a Steering Gear Machinery Room Watch manned by a Machinist Mate full time underway. Keep in mind he is below deck and not privy as to what is going on topside except for what he is told.
If the steering gear pumps and associated gear are fully operational and it's simply a loss of control between Helm and gear room he can manually operate the rudders when given the degrees from there and keep the ship on course. The orders are either given over the sound powered phone or the squawk box {which ever MC they used}. He can IIRC even steer if electrical power is lost by manual pumps which is much slower for obvious reasons.
We practiced literal loss of steering, loss of the entire Bridge as in destroyed, Loss of Central, and all had back ups which were tested.
Very crowded waters and lots of mix of big and small vessels.
