For years the number of stay-at-home dads has been rising, as more men take on responsibility for looking after the home and family. But now the trend appears to be reversing, with the number falling sharply to a three-year low - and experts say the novelty of being a "new man" could be wearing off.

Yes, it’s better than both being GONE.
So don’t knock it, FReeper males.
Actually I sympathize with many today. Both HAVE to work - and yet, it costs money to do that day-care thing. Unless the kids are in school (potentially), which is just taxes.
It all comes back to the income tax. It’s unconstitutional, and should be abolished. We’d see a lot of this nonsense dissipate without fed income tax.
Even if it's not the Onion.
Dropping birthrate is another reason for decline at stay-at-home parents overall. Not need to stay once the kids are in school, and millennials aren't having as many kids (or even getting into relationships).
Can I ask you what age you retired? I’m 61 and thinking about it soon.
“deliberate and intentional discrimination ensured that the women got jobs.”
Oh really?
I quit my 15-year engineering job to raise my son. At 5 years he would go to school and I’d try to recover it. Didn’t help that at that time, I had major medical problems with surgery and hospital stays, so had to put it off yet again. By the time I really started trying, it had been 6 years.
I’ve sent out gazillions applications over several years. I’m moving onto 10 years out. I’ve had regular interviews, half of them through my old employer (various satellite sites) and even through my husband’s friend at work. Not a single bite. I’ve basically given up.
I remember what I did at work like the back of my hand. That’s not a problem.
I generally blame my “gap”, but my father brought up - and then my husband assented - that maybe I’m just being used for quotas with those interviews.
The quotas apply to INTERVIEWS, not offers.
My father and husband are NO liberals. None of us is knee-jerk feminist, or any such thing.
But no, it’s not that easy to get a job just because you’re a woman.
doomed to fail
Exactly going against Gods plan, man.
Nutshellin it almost friday!
MAGA
You forgot dishes. Never-ending dishes too.
Even for 3 people, it’s all pretty constant and same-old, same-old. And dishes and laundry pretty much make it impossible to really keep up with the other stuff. That’s what I’ve noticed about traditional home roles - women’s work is exactly the same, day-in day-out, all year. Cabin fever; stir crazy.
Men get to “go out” and even at home all their chores involve “outdoors” and almost always vary and are not daily. Lawn is not done all year, or even every day in season. Snow-shoveling is not a given, but only for a few months at best. Grilling (why do men cook in this case?), not a given but only half the year maybe.
Anyway, off my observational soapbox.
So he retired early?
Perhaps because Trump’s economy is hiring again.
Tell your husband he is my mentor in this area. It is my goal!
My son in law is staying home for a few years til the new grandchild hits school. The daughter in law has a great job as a nurse and he does all housework etc. They seem happy with it.
The reality of men staying home and women working is not what was sold.
Non-working men lose respect from themselves, their women, and everyone else.
They become less attractive to women.
The quotas apply to INTERVIEWS, not offers.
sorry, but that is not entirely accurate...quotas are derived from, and measured by, the census reports corporations are require to file with the federal government each calendar year; deviations from government norms must be identified and detailed...
It may be, but alot like the Rooney Rule in the NFL - they have to talk to some coaches of color, not actually hire them. I’m sure it’s more complex since gov likes making everything tough, but the bottom line is, I get about 10% interviews from my applications, and then no jobs.
Another point: my old company - which handled most of my interviews - is a major government contractor of major product. They’d have to toe the line quite a bit with that hanging over them.
Wait - who’s the in-law?
No, darling. Throw out the meds and just stop doing his laundry, calling his relatives, or cooking for two. Microwave yourself a meal and tell him to get his own supper. Don’t shop for him, go anywhere with him or do anything for him until he is willing to come to the bargaining table. Arrive there with a comprehensive list of all household chores and a chart of who will be responsible for which, and what the consequences will be if they are not done. Don’t do it with anger or vengefulness, but with cool indifference, like it is a business meeting. Because it is.
I was thinking the same thing, but for them to say that would be to admit 0 tanked the economy, and that things are getting better under Trump.
Mr. GG2’s son and DIL. All in laws to me. :-)
