POLITICAL VALUES The California Assembly is expected to pass State Bill 54, which would take statewide 'sanctuary' policies on immigrants who are in the US illegally. As loud as the calls for and against these laws have become, hard data on the impact they've had at the local level is still scarce.
LOS ANGELES AND OAKLAND, CALIF. California is one step closer to calling itself a sanctuary state.
On Monday Gov. Jerry Brown (D) and state Senate leader Kevin De León struck a deal on Senate Bill 54, or the California Values Act, making the state potentially the next in the nation to limit state and local law enforcements ability to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. Only Oregon has a similar law, which it passed in 1987 though some have called Illinois newly signed TRUST Act a sanctuary state measure. New Mexico and Colorado also have comparable proposals pending in their respective legislatures.
The move to take sanctuary policies statewide comes in a year in which the Trump administration has vowed to take action against cities and counties that have adopted measures to shield undocumented immigrants from deportation. More than 500 jurisdictions now have some form of sanctuary policy in the books. The trend has prompted backlash from the Department of Justice and some police departments, which say that such policies make it more difficult for law enforcement to maintain public safety.
We believe that it is in everyones best interest to have [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] remove dangerous and violent criminals because the people they prey on are disproportionately the immigrant community itself, says Bill Brown, sheriff of Santa Barbara County and president of the California Sheriffs Association.

California will be in a state of rebellion if they pass this law. Their governor and all who support this law should be arrested, prosecuted for treason, and then executed.
Wrong question.
Right question: Do such polices violate the U.S. Constitution? I think so.
Can federal law enforcement funds be withheld?
Should, but won't. Trump should punish them via withholding of federal funds, but won't. The wall should be built along California first. It may, but it will also be subject to sabotage, supported by the state.
I realize Trump was up against it after the election, but so many issues are just slipping through the cracks. The people who are allowed to remain in their government jobs is near the top of the disappointments so far.
Elected officials in California are more interested in illegal aliens than representing citizens of the state. This is treason.
Open revolt by elected officials should be countered with a declaration of martial law and forcible removal from office.
Does this mean that there will be open immigration to California, i.e. anyone who wants to immigrate to California and vote, receive welfare, receive medical care, receive all the benefits of US citizenship, etc. may do so?
America needs to stop accepting their driver’s licenses as ID and should consider requiring passports.
jerry brown and at least some in the Californication legislature know full well that immigration law is a matter of federal jurisdiction
anything they pass on that topic is primarily for show
and cannot change much in the real world
When did liberals start caring whether a program worked or not?
California poised to become 'sanctuary' state. But do such policies work?
Sure they work. Just not maybe the way libs want them to work.
See?
I would insist all federal disbursements to CA end if they are just going to give it to every illegal that wanders up.
A+
Will work until tax money runs out as in the people of CA are taxed beyond their ability to pay. But then the state will confiscate whatever resources they have, house, car, whatever in order to take care of those Dreamers and other illegal border crashers.
Jeff Sessions will mumble about it and do nothing.
Yep, you are 100% correct.
Perhaps we will see a “new” Excutive Order come from Trump claiming “Kalifornica” is cut off for ALL Federal funding for ANYTHING and permanently. Maybe, just maybe we will get lucky.
