Mexican director Guillermo del Toro hopes his latest critically-acclaimed film can help repair what he calls a broken political system following President Donald Trumps election.
The director, whose Cold War fairy-tale drama The Shape of Water just won the coveted Golden Lion at this years Venice Film Festival, told reporters at the Toronto International Film Festival this week that Trumps Make America Great Again campaign slogan was a callback to a time in 1960s America in which if you were white, Anglo-Saxon and Protestant, it was a great time to be alive, but not if you were anything else.
Its like a cancer. We have a tumor now, the Oscar nominee told reporters, according to the Hollywood Reporter. That doesnt mean the cancer started with that tumor. It was gestating for so long.
The director, who was born in Guadalajara Jalisco in 1964, also hit out at proponents of strict immigration enforcement in the U.S.
Ive seen, for most people, this thing started two years ago. But if youre Mexican, and you crossed the border, they never really went away, he said. Theyve been latent all this time.

Trash talk from the Left.
Trash talk from the ignorant pseudo Right.
Trump is evidently the worst president since Satan. Oh wait, he is Satan to these people.
Hey look, another idiot from Hollywood I’ll be boycotting.
Stay out of my country you Commie taco-bender.
So, putting all people back to work is racist? Expanding industry and business is racist? Allowing people to make and keep their wages is racist?
The left gets sillier by the moment. No wonder more and more are ditching the leftist hysteria.
Another movie maker that doesn’t want my business.
They are just way out of touch and this past presidential election proved it.
Yep.
Just another on the long list of idiots who I will no longer support by buying their work.
Why don't all these loud-mouthed Mexicans go back & fix MEXICO? People who live in glass houses... and all that.

BTW. Guillermo del Toro translates to William Of The Bull
I Guess He Was Born To Spread The BULL!
del Toro — “MAGA is a callback to a time in 1960s America in which if you were white, Anglo-Saxon and Protestant...”
Never ONCE have I heard Trump say anything like that. Nothing even close to that. He wants all Americans to succeed, regardless of color, national origin or religion. That success can be achieved by getting the GD bloated, overweening government out of our way. MAGA means making American mighty again and returning to the things that make us great — economic and political freedom, rewards for hard work, strong defense, self-reliance, and virtue.
Where the heck do these commie rat bastards get off equating those qualities with evil?
So in the 1960s America was so White and Anglo Saxon and Protestant that it elected a Roman Catholic as its chief executive. It also allowed Latinos to flood into south Florida from Cuba.
He shouldn’t single out priviledged militant leftists of the 60s who came from wealthy families and barely spent time behind prison doors. Today they work in academia and their past sins ignored,
F a bubch of commie/love.
Why can't you have a great time to be alive if you are "anything else"?
Why do you imply that the "great time" discriminates by race?
James Brown saw a ton of success in the 1960s and said that it couldn’t have happened anyplace BUT America.
My take on Mexico is that it is effectively an Aristocrat/Peasant based system. Mexico works the way it does precisely because the ruling class there (mostly whites of Spanish descent) do not want the peones to get uppity. They do not want class mobility.
Liberals in America are trying to institute exactly this same sort of system in the USA, with the "elite" social classes of New York and Los Angeles ruling over us "deplorables" in flyover country.
I've heard that trope for the last 50 years. So tell me, what was so bad about those times for others? Okay, there was still some residue from Jim Crow for black people. And queers weren't exactly the social leaders of the day. But how was post-war America the social hellhole libs want us to believe it was?
Everyone shared in that post-war prosperity. At least everyone who wanted to.
