Amazon has been monitoring and deleting reviews after Hillary Clinton's new book was greeted with a torrent of criticism on the day it was released.
What Happened, which covers the former Secretary of State's unsuccessful election campaign against Donald Trump, was published on Tuesday. Clinton and her publisher Simon & Schuster claimed the book would offer a candid account of her failure and her own reflection on it.
Reviews of What Happened have been mixed, with some suggesting it Clinton uses it as an opportunity to blame others such as Bernie Sanders and Vladimir Putin for her failure, rather than herself. In The New York Times, which supported Clinton's campaign, Jennifer Senior writes that the book is "a score-settling jubilee".
The readers on Amazon, meanwhile, are even more divided but not all of them have read the book. The online retail giant has a "verified purchase" option to signpost whether reviewers have bought a product, and none of the 42 reviewers leaving comments on Tuesday had done so.
Few of the one-star reviews remain on the website, but reports and screen grabs show that reviewers used the space to criticize the former First Lady and spread conspiracy theories about her and Bill Clinton.
One one-star review, which remains on the website at the time of writing, reads: "Read all the promotional excerpts, which combined come close to book length pretty good novel. It is fiction, isn't it? Surely, someone is playing a joke."
Amazon is rarely moved to delete reviews so publicly, although in November negative comments under a book by anti-Trump broadcaster Megyn Kelly appeared to be removed by the retailer.

they will have to delete the one star review I gave her after reading this also :P
Better title:
“Loser’s Cry”
Since hardly any of the one-star reviews came from verified purchasers, I can dig deleting them. It’s doubtful the ‘reviewer’ ever cracked open the book.
How many of the positive reviews read the book?
I was watching her interviews on YouTube, and she had one video with 653 dislikes and 1 like. I got a chuckle. She needs to go check in to a rest home and get out of the lime light. She might mantain a small bit of respectability, but if she continues this, it is social identity suicide.
I agree. Why should Amazon support spamming by people who haven’t read the book.
Which raises the question: Does Amazon do this for conservative authors?
“Since hardly any of the one-star reviews came from verified purchasers, I can dig deleting them. Its doubtful the reviewer ever cracked open the book.”
It doesn’t work both ways. If a conservative publishes a book, there are thousands of negative “reviews” before anyone reads the book.
It’s been coordinated. The “verified purchase” reviewers have been waging a war against the one-star reviewers for their babe in the “reviews” for days.
I agree with you. What does a review made by someone who has not read the book in question actually tell us about the book? I suspect that such a review tells much more about the reviewer (who, by the act, reveals himself to be a doofus) than about the book.
It serves her right. The Democrats put millions of people out of work. Now these resentful people have time on their hands. Time enough to spam liberal authors on Amazon.
If they bought the book, ie, verified purchasers, the likelihood of having at least looked inside is greater than someone who didn’t buy it.
I think they should send Hillary Clinton’s book to North Korea so they’ll have something to eat.
So after they deleted all the one star reviews, were any left to post?
SHE SHOULD RUN AGAIN!
ONLY THIS TIME DO ALL THOSE THINGS SHE WISHED SHE WOULD HAVE DONE!
Snowball and Napoleon would be proud of Amazon!
Fair enough, but Amazon is nowhere consistent in how it applies this standard. Ultimately, they should only let verified purchasers post reviews of anything, positive or negative.
I agree.
A few observations:
- 1-star reviews receive many times more positive “Was this review helpful?” responses than the 5-star reviews do.
- Comments on the 5-star reviews are overwhelmingly anti-hillary, and very entertaining to read.
:)
I have to agree with you.
I’ve left plenty of one star reviews of lousy books on Amazon and never had any of them taken down, even when I hadn’t purchased them. It’s probably because none of them were written by lib icons.
