Full Title: 'Is anybody else mesmerized?' Sign language interpreter steals the show during Hurricane Irma press conference with dramatic facial expressions
While Florida Governor Rick Scott was telling Floridians how to prepare for Hurricane Irma, a sign language interpreter stole the show. During Scott's remarks on Saturday, the especially expressive interpreter stuck out his tongue, grimaced and bulged his eyes to convey the severity of the situation.
The unidentified interpreter's antics caused a stir on social media, with the majority of people on Twitter praising his dramatic American Sign Language interpretation.
As he signed for the sentence saying water 'flows in fast, very fast, and then it flows out,' the interpreter appeared to make jazz hands.
While Florida Governor Rick Scott was telling Floridians how to prepare for Hurricane Irma, a sign language interpreter stole the show.

That’s a very good point. The cameraman should have positioined himself in front of the governor, and not to the side like that.

I saw this press conference, and he did indeed “steal the show”. I suspect he did what he was trained to do, but in this context the training probably should be altered a bit.

Thanks. That would have helped.
I did see video of the governor before, and not this guy or anyone else was this distracting in that video.
Academically, I can say this guy is doing a good job. If 95% of the viewers were in need of a signer, it might affect my thoughts so that I’d moderate my opinion here.

I thought you might enjoy this.

Can’t they just close-caption it? Do we REALLY need something this distracting for 99.9% of the viewers, so that the 0.1% don’t need to read? It was so annoying here in Houston that I wasn’t even able to listen to the people speak during Harvey - I had to shut it off.
Or am I missing something?

Stupid politically correct drama. Subtitles are much more effective.

Yeah.... no. We ALL get to judge. That’s how the internet works. If it annoys some people, that makes us even happier.

I think they canned him. Didn’t see him at later Scott pressers today!

The Human Eye is always drawn to the most animated person or object in any scene.
I don't mean any disrespect to the hearing impaired,
but it looks odd to see comical, for lack of a better word, facial expressions at a press conference concerning life and death decisions.

Stupid politically correct drama. Subtitles are much more effective. How many subtitles do you read? Just curious. You ever turn your sound off and turn on the subtitles? They're hilariously inaccurate.

As I said on
an earlier post, the cameraman should have positioned himself to be facing the governor straight on instead of at an angle. In the olden days they would have put the interpreter in a little bubble at the bottom-right of the screen. Both tactics would have worked better than filming the announcement from an angle, thereby placing the ASL interpreter front and center.

Not at all. In fact, I look forward to his hilarious interpretation of the upcoming death and destruction figures. Googly eyes and blowing raspberries and it’s gonna be a laff riot!
Thanks for educating me. Now I know about appropriate signing.

Well we in the ASL interpreting community are always glad to entertain you! Sad that you think a disability is so funny though...

The creepiest part of that clip are the three adoring female journalists. These are the same looks that women in Nazi Germany used to give to Hitler.
To: DesertRhino
I am hearing impaired, and I find subtitles/ closed captions annoying and invariably incomplete (often using just a few words for a sentence, and even whole sentences are skipped) --- and consequently wildly inaccurate.
The malapropisms can be funny --- "laid 'im on the green" for "Lady Mondegreen" is legendary--- and once I saw Rev. Jerry Falwell on the TV talking about a "Salt" Ministry (you know, like "you are the salt of the earth") and it was captioned "Assault Ministry". But it's not funny if you're conveying Hurricane Survival information.
Maybe better if the Governor delivered the information via PowerPoint? Because subtitles are the worst.
Just my experience. YMMV.
