Hurricane Irma Live Thread III
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/09/2017 2:08:31 PM PDT by NautiNurse

The entire Florida Peninsula and points north are poised to experience Hurricane Irma after the storm hugged Cuba's northern coastline. Thousands of Floridians who evacuated the Atlantic cost to Gulf Coast areas found their safe shelter under direct threat from Hurricane Irma as the forecast shifted W Friday night and Saturday. Hurricane Irma's prolonged interaction with Cuba diminished its strength to Category 3.

Irma is forecast to increase in strength as it crosses the FL Straits. The Florida Keys experienced strong outer bands while Irma grazed the N Cuba coastline.

I age(13)was on crutches for this year!
You want to see what “Squirrely” things Hurricanes can do?
All South Florida was flooded in September and October storms!
Our yard in Miama was 3’ under water.

I have a question. Sorry if it’s stupid.....but wouldn’t it be safe up in a high rise? I see high rise buildings like apartments, offices, condos, etc and I’ve never heard of a building being blown over? Just asking.......

Knowing your background I’ve got to ask you what the heck is a longitude of 279.1?
That’s what the people I’m following (http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/products/tc_realtime/storm.asp?storm_identifier=AL112017) have for Irma now.

On the internet I can’t find any Earth coordinate system that uses such a number.

From what I heard yesterday, the higher you are, the windier it is so even though I doubt a building would be blown over it would still be pretty darn scary being on the 14th floor

A heading of 270 is Due West. 360 is North.

So, 300 is North West. 11 PM advisory says movement is 305. That means, Northwest...

It’s a process, changing directing,... takes a little time. Forward motion though is almost stopped... that’s generally an indication that it’s adjusting to a new direction.

I wonder if that happens often there or did they miss watching all of those tsunami videos?

Thanks Sarah........yeah, I admit it would be scary. But if you just lay low, maybe grab some cheetos, and a radio, ....should be ok. No high rise ever got blown over. Not to my knowledge. Thanks.

Windows get blown out. Somewhere today I saw a picture from a previous storm of a highrise with nearly every window blown.

A bearing of 300 be West by Northwest.

OK. Looking at it a little bit, I noticed the chart below it uses the normal longitude coordinates.

Then I noticed that the chart with the weird numbers is the FORECAST coordinates.

What I would say then is the the 2 (representing the 200) is simply put in there to distinguish what is being forecast from what has actually happened.

So the forecast positions of 279.1 is actually a forecast of the position of 79.1, but the 2 designates as being a forecast longitude instead of an actual one.

Another rule idea...
“ How about before you rant about Florida,s people not doing what you think they should do in a hurricane...you look around your lovely home and all your possessions and humbly be grateful with what You are blessed with that is not tonight being threatened to be damaged or lost.”

The problem is, winds increase the higher up you go above ground. So high rises get more wind and lose windows.

IMO, the wind would be less of a danger than the storm surge battering at the foundation.

I would less expect it to topple from being blown over as opposed to collapsing from the foundations being destroyed.

I would NOT stay in a high rise during a hurricane, ESPECIALLY if I was within the storm surge forecast area.

Eye cleared out, deeper and wider convection around the eye.

Yep..general structure is still pretty strong. If She dithers around here, over water.. until tomorrow morning, there's a pretty good chance she's going to strengthen, at least a little.

Could skate by the west coast as a weak Strong Cat 3, or weak Cat 4. That's would cause a TON of storm surge damage. Much worse than a east coast skirt by. Insurance execs gotta be puckered up tonight.

Those tracks are where the experts said the hurricane would go.
I don’t see how the experts can be blamed for people ignoring them and putting things there anyway.

Perhaps I misunderstand you.

BTW, yes the wind speed does increase with height.

A great deal and very quickly.

Which is why when you are flying a kite, you can get it to stay up fairly easily once you get it high enough.

wouldn’t it be safe up in a high rise?

On higher floors--absolutely not.
