The entire Florida Peninsula and points north are poised to experience Hurricane Irma after the storm hugged Cuba's northern coastline. Thousands of Floridians who evacuated the Atlantic cost to Gulf Coast areas found their safe shelter under direct threat from Hurricane Irma as the forecast shifted W Friday night and Saturday. Hurricane Irma's prolonged interaction with Cuba diminished its strength to Category 3.
Irma is forecast to increase in strength as it crosses the FL Straits. The Florida Keys experienced strong outer bands while Irma grazed the N Cuba coastline.

I so hope those folks can get off the highway before it makes landfall

oh me too. Is the cam currently running?
My bet is that the storms eye will miss Florida altogether. I bet it destroys Key West then scoots along the Gulf just missing Florida until it slams into Pensacola or maybe Mobile.
ping for later
My wife just read off some texts from her brother who lives in Tampa/St. Pete. He and his family are staying. My wife asked why, and he told her that, in reality, at this point there’s no way out. Like Davey Crockett said in their excellent post, no flights, can’t drive, and no gas.
He will keep us updated as long as he can while they still have power and communications.
Im here in Broward...sent the fam to Tampa on Tues......outside of Tampa. They are now in a school shelter. Everyone from s Florida thought it would be safer...
Hurricane Irma is a bad mother. But youve done your due diligence in the event Hurricane Irma makes landfall as a Category 4 or 5 storm on Sunday. You have your shutters up. You took in anything that could become a projectile in the winds. Your pantry is stocked.
Good.
Now dont be a fool and get yourself hurt or killed doing stupid things during and after the storm. Heres your lucky seven tips on getting through Irma intact.
1. Dont X the windows with tape
Are you still taping your windows? Do you drive with your blinkers on during the rain, too?
When you run tape over your windows you arent making them stronger. Rather, should they be pummeled by flying debris and still break, they will do so as larger, potentially deadly pieces, according to Gizmodo. Better to have a window break into small pieces that wont cause potential great bodily harm. Plus, youll have cleanup to do anyway. Sun-baked tape on a window is a bear to remove.
2. Dont crack open the windows to relieve pressure
Some people think its a good idea to crack open a window to relieve the pressure inside the house lest the dwelling explode from within. Given that all of our homes have little openings here and there its highly unlikely a hurricane will build up enough pressure inside to blow.
If you willingly open a window to let the wicked wind in youre not going to like the result when said wind tries to escape.
3. Water isnt your only enemy its the wind, too When you scrimp on money, or personal energy, and only board or shutter the windows that face a body of water youre making a mistake. Hurricanes move and rotate as do the tornadoes they often spawn so dont assume the winds will come from one direction. Windows are most susceptible to the flying debris like rocks or the patio furniture your infuriating neighbor left out on his balcony. Board up and go all the way.
4. Dont push back on a bowing door or window
Despite your best efforts, a powerful storm like Irma could lead to the surreal visual of your doors and windows bending to the pressure. They may or may not hold. But you arent going to help them by pushing back or leaning against them, no matter how much you weigh. If the doors or windows blow in, your flesh and blood is no match. And if youre doing this, you probably taped your windows so read No. 1 again.
5. Use flashlights, not candles.
Sure, candles set a romantic mood or foreboding if thats your thing (been watching too much Game of Thrones). But candles tip or get knocked down and can start fires. Flashlights are much safer. And you did buy enough batteries, right?
6. Stay inside unless you *must* venture out
Yep, cabin fever has probably already set in as you walk around your shuttered home. But if you can stay in a little longer after Irma departs youll be better off. Downed trees and power lines can be dangerous if you blindly stumble into them. Drive only if you have to as roads without stop lights and strewn with debris, or under water, can be deadly.
7. Dont run a generator if your windows are open.
Do not run a generator from inside your house or garage even if you have the doors and windows open. Fire hazard. The same warning applies to running it from your balcony when you live in a multi-unit building like an apartment or town house. Balconies are too close to your own living areas and to your neighbors homes. And if you have a gas stove, keep the generator far from the kitchen or gas water heater or gas powered washer/dryers.
Also, never run a generator on grass or on a metal surface. Make sure the surface is dry before starting your generator, and keep your hands dry, too. And never connect the generator to your homes wiring system, fuse box or circuit breaker unless you have already had a qualified electrician install a transfer switch. If not correctly connected, the power can flow outside the house to the power lines and fatally injure workers who are there trying to restore power to everyone.
He is right. SC upstate and GA is booked. In a twist of irony Myrtle Beach Hotels are accepting.
No, not now, but the new season was supposed to start Oct. 1, then the cams would come back on They have been seen together in the last week or so, building up their nest. I hope it doesn’t get destroyed and they move somewhere else. I just hope they survive this ordeal. Beautiful eagles.
Yeah, it was a tough call for the guys but at least the house made it through the the IIRC 35 event. It’s pre 1900ish.
Thank DC. These arm chair meteorologists don’t have a clue.
I left Hollywood and had to get to Ocala to assist my mom.
Jumped outta the pot and into the fire.
I will defer to folks who are more meteorology savvy than me. I do know that tropical systems tend to go poleward—eventually.
The wind in the tropics generally goes from east to west (look up the trade winds) while in the temperate zone they go the other way. The tropics makes sense as the earth is turning eastward and the air isn’t quite dragged fast enough to keep up. I’ve never figured out the physics which get the temperate regions’ winds to move faster than earth’s rotation.
To say nothing of the "OMIGOD WE'RE GOING TO DIE!!!" facial expressions.
We've got a number of these things. They are terrific. Compact, easy to use.
Thanks. I didn’t mean to put you on the spot, knowing others would come by and address it.
Take care.
It’s a big storm. Looks like there’s really no where to go, east or west or north inside Florida.
Is anybody from the NH area planning to go down to Florida to help out after the hurricane? I’d be interested in catching a ride with anyone doing that.
It’s getting hard to find an old fashioned battery operated transistor radio at stores anymore.
Thanks for the links.
