Trump, Schumer agree to pursue plan to repeal the debt ceiling

President Trump and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) have agreed to pursue a deal that would permanently remove the requirement that Congress repeatedly raise the debt ceiling, three people familiar with the decision said.

Trump and Schumer discussed the idea Wednesday during an Oval Office meeting. The two, along with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D–Calif.), agreed to work together over the next several months to try to finalize a plan, which would need to be approved by Congress.

One of the people familiar described it as a “gentlemen’s agreement.”

Senate Democrats hope they will be able to finalize an arrangement with Trump by December.

“The president encouraged congressional leaders to find a more permanent solution to the debt ceiling so the vote is not so frequently politicized,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

Exactly — which will force Congress to manage our debt in a way they haven’t been required to do in years.

Yep....Trump said from the get go he'd do whatever he needed to to get what he wanted ‘done’ with the GOP or without.....that he'd work with ‘whoever would’ do so regardless of which side they were on.....the GOPE is now seeing just what that means....let them eat peas!..They had their chance and showed themselves to be as much obstructionists as the left. Doesn't matter 'who' Trump has to work with IMO...if they join him on one or many issues and get what needs to be done...more power to them....and that's the bottom line....get it done!

That’s the stuff of revolutionary regime change.

“higher interest rates on US debt.”

Anyone who buys US Bonds is stupid.

There’s no other word for it.

I actually think that the Dem core constituencies are pretty sophisticated in terms of policy. If Schumer and Pelosi can get them policies they want from a minority position, they will treat them as god-kings.

The narrative is already forming. “Schumer and Pelosi are out-smarting Trump and taking the steering wheel from him.”

But this is where the sophistication will come into play. The media won’t say this. And the Democratic leadership certainly won’t say this.

As soon as DACA passes, Trump is going to get the most positive coverage of his life.

“He’s matured!”
“He’s learned how Washington really works!”

And he’ll eat that up, because of course he will. And they’ll get more out of him. And then right before the midterms, they’ll call him a Nazi sympathizer again.

progressively fines Congresscritters when they run a deficit

Go back and read the Constitution. What you propose requires a Constitutional amendment proposed by Congress or the state legislatures, and ratified by 3/4 of the states.

Schumer is apparently at the White House today talking infrastructure.

Chuck thinks that he is running in open field.

Mark Meadows has to be on suicide watch right now.

You are correct except that it isn’t “apparently” a worthless idea, it IS a worthless idea.

Get rid of it and get as much as you can get from the democrats, for it.

Good for Trump. If the friggin Republicans won’t work with you, then work where you can with the out of power Democrats. This could work!

If Republicans refuse to use their power, Trump can give power to the Democrats.

I don’t care to watch sausage being made, but I love to each sausage!

Oh, and I love WINNING!!!!

Maybe this "gentlemen's agreement" will bring them to their senses.

OH. MY. SIDES.

You've GOT to be kidding!!!

Neither party wants to cut spending. Neither one.

This is a disaster, no other way to look at it. Trump did say he's the "king of debt" ... and now he's going to make the USA the KING of nations of debt.

I don’t think it puts them on the defensive at all. They’d be getting unlimited spending capacity and a big divisions between the WH and GOP, all from a minority position in Congress. That’s wins on multiple fronts for them.

All they do is spin it as Schumer/Pelosi outsmarting the President to give them what they want, and the lefties will eat it up. They’ll be plenty of other areas where they can go all-out on obstructing the President, and the lefties will eat that up, too.

Eliminating the debt ceiling means that the Freedom Caucus really has no purpose to its existence any longer.

I don’t know any longer if that’s what we want.

How can it be a ‘ceiling’ if they raise it any time they see fit to do so?

It’s apparently a worthless idea........................

...

I agree. It’s meaningless theater and hasn’t stopped the GOPe and Democrats from stealing a fortune.

Missouri, a heavily republican state, has a balanced budget requirement. There is no debt ceiling since deficit spending is against the law. It’s really quite simple, and is called fiscal responsibility.
