Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, well gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail its a secure shelter. Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

If you were listening to the show yesterday he said he will not be on the show today. Mark Stein filling in on Friday.
“He (Scott) even thought of things like suspending tolls on all toll roads “
Didn’t he, or one of his people, also make it possible for pharmacies to fill prescriptions earlier than they were supposed to so people could have their future meds before evacuating? That sounds small, but it could be a life-or-death thing. He seems like a great manager and organizer.
On FNC, I heard Pam Bondi this morning scolding one of the gas companies — Chevron, I think — for their price gouging.
new eye is 45 miles wide right now recon still finding 145 MPH winds
Jose is also now a Cat 4
I’m on the Treasure Coast. Martin County Sheriff just gave an update that is way better than the “you’re all gonna die!” Weather Channel harpies. I’m keeping my TV on local channels. These people live here, too.
And no, it’s still not gonna be pretty, whatever Cat it comes in at.
Ditto for us here in E. TN. I’m a little worried, but my husband isn’t. Our last house had a whole-house generator, but this doesn’t and I’m wishing we had installed one.
There are going to be a lot of people on that peninsula hunkered down and riding out the storm.
new ping for later
It is my understanding, that Rush is getting out of Dodge, and Mark Steyn will be subbing today.
That route (through Perry) should be good - and people might even find gas :)
I’ll rarely agree with NautiNurse - but in this case, she’s right.
Save it for later...much later.
amen Nelson, I agree.
Only heard part of Rush’s show yesterday, so missed that part.
hush, that’s not what he’s saying at all. God wants us to turn to HIM (as opposed to worshiping on the throne of SELF) and storms (and any other tragedy) are used by God to open our eyes.
Ellandra,
NautiNurse alerted me to this. I’m a retired Army National Guard Officer in Puerto Rico. I’ll ask my contacts there to let me know about the situation in SXM. As of now we know that the Princess Juliana Airport is heavily damaged and that the French and Dutch armed forces have opcon there. I believe they are evacuating French and Dutch nationals to Curacao first. Americans need to contact the State Department.
Again, I’ll ask around to see if any private charters are being allowed in there yet.
The GFS model which has consistently been too far north and east is shifting the track west, and even taking the storm a bit into Cuba before the turn.
The most accurate model has been ECMWF followed by UKMET. Underground shows the UKMET track on the computer models page in white. ECMWF can be found:
I’ll never understand people’s love affair with freeways, even if it means frequent four-hour stand-stills or arriving at the destination later. But I’m claustrophobic and the thought of being trapped between two exits kind of freaks me out. I like a lot of side streets — escapes. I prefer to keep moving. :)
Stop it already. Not the place or time for this, you have been asked yet you still do it, why?
Yes
Today she said she’s evacuating
You focused on the not an exact science part, and skipped over the not as easy as you think part. Perhaps I should have only cut and paste that portion instead of the whole sentence.
There are some people who are in difficult situations, and cant easily move or be moved. You don’t know everything.
In your earlier post, you said, “The vast majority of people left in South Florida are risking death and should not be given sympathy.” That’s pretty callous in my book. I hope that at some point in your life, when you need help, someone else doesn’t say to you that you don’t deserve compassion.
I am not disagreeing with you on paralysis by analysis. I do object to your “sympathy” statement.
Our house is only 12 miles ( as the crow flies) from Cocoa Beach...
....so I have concerns about it too
