Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, well gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail its a secure shelter. Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

The downcasters have to realize. This is dead serious. The track really doesn’t matter unless the completely unexpected happens. Shifts 30 miles in either direction will not change the fact that this will be an unprecedented hurricane strike for this country. And people could be without power for months, not just weeks.
There are resorts on the islands there; but they are said to have been evacuated. The city of Morón is about 15 miles inland from the shore. I can't find any recent news on it.
The one thing the Cuban Government does well is hurricane evacuation.
Very sad
....”Somewhere I read that 5.6 million people have evacuated”....
I heard that too....just goes to show if you want to move people in mass , in a hurry, it sure looks like it can be done. However, not all left in one full swing either, even so pretty remarkable....all hands were on deck to make it happen as well.
Yeah, when you can order a mandatory evacuation at gunpoint, they become much more effective.
NHC says Irma is back up to Cat 5 now.
Very true. As of midnight local weather report on WPTV (NBC affiliate in WPB) we are looking at 18 - 24 hrs of tropical storm winds with gusts up to 100 mph. Up to 18” of rain and maybe more. That itself is really rough and we’re not even projected in the cone right now. This is one for the ages!
I see that.
I wonder if there are actually any bars open in Key West right now?
One or two bars still open - the terminal drunks, the “Ah, nothing’s gonna happen to me” types, the danger seekers, the “I Don’t Care Anymore” people, etc...
At least a deputy Sherriff finally convinced my sister to leave her trailer. Orange County is under mandatory evacuation for trailers now... my family could not talk sense into her.
This was CNN Oppermans broadcast when just the first outer band of Irma hit Cuba...(he’s the only correspondent allowed in Cuba.) Said thousands had evacuated and thousands more to the hills with other family members.....any who could were out before it hit...

10,000 without power now in Miami-Dade, but I’m wondering how accurate this is though.
Bully for that deputy.
bttt
Still not seeing any damages from Cuba....an old film is being used by some though...gritty like old photos when they’re being used for something they’re not.
.can I be a moron too ? No one ever let’s me be a moron
Yes, you can
Well there are some creeps who hang out at these storm watcher sites and who post about this hurricane who seem to get really angry when people point out it’s not the end of the world. Will stuff get blown around and flooding? Yes.
There are some who are almost excited at the prospect of destruction like voyeurs watching a traffic accident.
They like me, they really really like me
And of course we know how the media is with the thought of a good catastrophe.
