Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Looks bad to me the west coast will get the eye wall and the east coast the dirty side, not good. Any estimates for how strong the storm will be for north central Florida?

Yes most likely, but landfall in one place in the gulf will be more manageable than destroying the entire Florida peninsula!

So I’m watching this webcam someone posted for the keys. All day long it’s quiet but just now looked and saw someone riding a bike on the small bridge.

Also all day the web cam was panning but now its pointed only west where the sun is going down. I saw clouds earlier and was trying to see if it was Irma or just normal rainclouds but now it won’t pan back that way.

Birds can see bad weather approaching. Hopefully they will all fly a long way south!
One of the wildlife refuges that got blasted is noted as a major spot for flamingos. A couple of hours ago I saw an article somewhere (probably Bahamian media) that said they made it through the storm OK.
mom is staying with friends in Sanford,FL. 2nd story of 3 story apts.
one sister back in WNC with one child. Others are grown and in Bradenton area. One son is paramedic/firefighter so am sure he is on duty.
other sister still at Miami Childrens with disabled child and other son who lives with her. No cell signal inside and cant leave him to go outside. He was diagnosed at 8 with adrenolykudsytrophy. Not sure I spelled that right. He was happy healthy till then. If you have seen the movie “Lorenzo’s Oil”, that is the disease. He requires around the clock care. He is 15 now. She stayed with me a month, couple years ago. It was quite a learning experience for us all.
I still am not sure why they are evacuating other hospitals and not this one?
anyway, still reading everyones great posts and praying for the best.

Well maybe a storm could trigger some change in that country.
I doubt the mass grave angle unless they had machinery that digs through cap rock in the 30’s.
If it doesn’t start going North, Havana could be in play.
I know a few people who have chosen to stay down there,I really wish they hadn’t.
Looks like a lower Keys hit to me.....
