Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, well gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail its a secure shelter. Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Hey, man! That’s all we got. We HAVE to call it a mountain! LOL!

OOps! hahahaha
That sounds far more reasonable! I anticipate flooding from the backyard pond and trees uprooted. Since they have no basement in a small home, where does one hunker down?
Thank you!!!!!
Thanks for this info. Not surprising, seeing the track this is currently taking. I am in Zone C.
Stay well!
Do you have trees that could potentially fall on the house? If so, get an understanding of likely wind direction from the storm in your location and get as far as you can from where they could fall as a result, preferably in an interior room. If they’re not especially large trees, they’ll just make a lot of noise and land on the roof, causing some damage but not crushing the structure. If they’re large hardwoods that can fall on the house, there could be a big problem.
I totally agree. However, Sheriff Snyder was very comforting whereas the weather channel is having a complete meltdown. That, I appreciated. It is raining here right now. Put a halt to our outside prep. NOT Irma related but kinda frustrating! Like, really? You gotta dump rain on us today??
Be safe in your travels.
Thank you.
Sorry! That last post was meant for NautiNurse.
I totally agree with your assessment of “you never know”. LOL
.....I wonder what this new track would do to the St. Johns River?....
There are now evacuations around the river in certain zone areas in Jacksonville....if you check elevation maps you can find the zones and if or not your area is in danger and degree of.
My brother’s place is above the evacuation zones...but then he did check this before buying his property and where they would look for their home since Florida gets hurricanes. However he’s ready to leave if it comes to that...right now they still intend to hunker down.
We're fine and not going anywhere. The track seems to be shifting west of us and keeping the eye over land. It is likely to be a minimal hurricane by the time it gets to our latitude.
For some strange reason I've had Jimmy Buffett's Surfing in a Hurricane running around in my head. Fancy that.

Hey you read my mind. Was just going to post it:)
Yes, that must be the USS Kearsarge that was headed our way but probably diverted there since we’re mostly okay. Good luck.
Also in Jacksonville. We’re not in a evacuation zone nor are we in a flood area.
As it looks for the moment, Irma will be a rougher ride than Matthew was but not dangerously so for us.
Right now I’m only concerned with my neighbors securing their homes & they yards. Anything outside that’s no secured becomes a dangerous missile when hurricane force winds are about.
We need to keep in mind that at 48 hours out, NHC’s average track error is 50 miles either way (just using that as an example), and, that the worst wind damage is usually not right on the line of the actual track of the storm center that occurs. Storm surge maximums and extreme flooding can be even further off the track.
Plus, there’s the very large eye this storm has, as others have commented. The swath of destruction may be ungodly wide, unlike Andrew, for example.
I know you know this, but we have a lot of readers who are not up on the intricacies of these matters, and, here, the details can kill you.
