Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, well gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail its a secure shelter. Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Where is Jose tracking? Looks like a repeat of Irma
Was just out and about in Countryside/Palm Harbor area.
There is a military helicopter flying around. And we saw two national guard HUGE vehicles driving down Landmark Blvd (which for non locals is probably a tertiary road with nothing but neighborhoods off of it).
the current path may be the best possible path out of all the bad options..every major city gets black eyes..but none get knocked out
not good for the keys though
The good news for SE FL is that NHC track shifted slightly west. The bad news is that the new eye is 46 miles wide so it DOESNT MATTER.

Well, I hope we don’t get it in Texas. However, God may have different ideas. Who knows?
Sanity!
Thank you!
That’s my concern in the Cape Coral/Fort Myers area. People who were going to ride it out are now heading to shelters.
Actually Irma is our best friend when it comes to Jose.
With no Irma, Jose would keep tracking on the same exact track Irma took. However, Irma has degraded the steering enough that Jose will turn northward as he reaches the Leeward islands -- not soon enough to spare St. martin, Angilla and Barbuda unfortunately -- and Jose will Become a Central Atlantic fish storm.
I’ve not heard of those, but I am curious. Whereabouts are they?
Lately, Irma seems to have had a knack for clobbering wildlife refuges and semi-refuges—Salt Cay, Ambergris Cays, Inagua.
I just looked at the Sarasota 10 day forecast on the weather channel and it looks like a lot of rain but no wind above 43 mph. Really?
Thats a fact!
My nephew just started college in Fort Myers. I am thankful he evacuated when he did. At first he was being stubborn about it, but either the school told them to leave, or he finally listened to his parents. I heard it was an 8 hour drive to Gainesville on Wednesday. I can’t imagine how long it would be now.
They always say the right side of the eye of a hurricane is where the strongest winds are located.
Looks like Miami wil be right in that spot. This would be an absolute worse case scenario going right up the coast.
According to this, Sarasota will get gusts up to 85 mph, if I’m reading the charts right. https://www.windy.com/27.336/-82.531?26.900,-82.343,8,m:eqIadRB
I totally agree. However, Sheriff Snyder was very comforting whereas the weather channel is having a complete meltdown. That, I appreciated. It is raining here right now. Put a halt to our outside prep. NOT Irma related but kinda frustrating! Like, really? You gotta dump rain on us today??
Be safe in your travels.
Thank you!!!!
I just learned 4th-hand that the Marines are heading there with 2 ships and 6 helicopters. Bad news is, Jose is now estimated to hit sooner than previously reported.
One hoax in particular said that power will be cut to Pinellas homes. He stressed that Pinellas Co. will NOT be cutting power to homes in evacuation Zone A.
PLEASE--Think before you post. Do not post your "feelings" or "guess" or "wishes" about where this storm may go. Millions of people are in the path of this storm, and need ACCURATE info.
