I am white. I am Jewish. I am an immigrant. I am a Russian American. But until recently I havent focused so much on those parts of my identity. Ive always thought of myself simply as a normal, unhyphenated American.
Ever since I arrived here, along with my mother and grandmother, from Russia in 1976 at age 7, I have been eager to assimilate. And Ive done a pretty good job of it. I dont have any accent, and I havent written much about my origins which, at any rate, dont have much to do with my job, which is writing about military history and American national security policy. So people are often surprised to find out that I wasnt born in the United States. When I tell them where Im from, they often ask, Were your parents diplomats? Nope. My parents were Russian Jews who fled the oppression of the Soviet Union and found a haven in the Land of Opportunity.
But that didnt seem to matter much. Until Donald Trump came along.
Last year I experienced the first sustained anti-Semitism I have ever encountered in the United States. Like many other anti-Trump commentators, I was deluged with neo-Nazi propaganda on social media, including a picture of me in a gas chamber, with Herr Trump in a Nazi uniform pulling the lever to kill me. This was accompanied by predictable demands that I leave this country to real Americans and go back to where I came from or, alternatively, to Israel.
At one time it was easy to dismiss such sentiments as the ravings of a handful of marginal losers. Thats harder to do now that the president of the United States has embraced the far-right agenda. Trump came to office vilifying Mexicans and Muslims.

“As president, he has praised the protesters who marched with neo-Nazis in Charlottesville as very fine people and come out against taking down Confederate monuments, symbols of white supremacy”
Funny how he didn’t get riled up when he also praised the people who marched with Antifa.
So the #NeverTrump people are all victims? Not buying it.
I seriously doubt this true.
I’d tell Max to cry me a river, but I don’t believe a word of this. It’s just more propaganda from The Washington Compost.
Well, bless your little heart, Max.....
You exposed yourself as a big-government globalist war-monger a long time ago.
If you don't feel welcome here anymore, then please go home to whatever Marxist sh!t-hole police state comes closest to what you've been trying to create here in my country.
Sincerely,
A Deplorable American
Donald Trump is about as anti-Semitic as Golda Meier.
If this fellow is 48 and did not experience anti-Semitism till last year, he must have been living in an underground bunker.
Sadly it can be found EVERYWHERE, all over the world. Donald Trump did not invent it the day he scored the nomination.
$1 says this is +/- 80% bullshit.
Leave.
It looks like you are blaming Trump for everything.
Cah cah doo doo.
Whinging Soviet mole...
This guy was just interviewed by Tucker Carlson. Another left-wing moron. Should be interesting to see if he’s telling the truth by looking up his twitter account.
In before Curly Bill.
The whole purpose for this story:
“...Like many other anti-Trump commentators...”
Oh for F’s sake...what nonsensical drivel...
